Comments

Just spent the better part of two days on this build. Hopefully there are others who can benefit from the steps I went through to make everything work.

Installation Steps (this is for advanced users - i.e. you should be very comfortable in the terminal and not afraid of digging into the kernel boot routine etc.)
  1. Make a UniBeast USB (click "Downloads" at the top of this page -> UniBeast)
  2. Download MultiBeast onto your USB (same downloads section)
  3. Turn off VT-d and put Secure Boot on "Other OS" in the UEFI BIOS
  4. Plug in your USB and boot from it (mash F8 at the ASUS logo - make sure you choose the USB boot entry that has "UEFI" in front of it.
  5. On the Clover bootloader screen, go to "Clover Settings" -> add "-v dart=0 cpus=1 npci=0x2000" to your boot arguments
  6. Boot from USB
  7. Install Sierra to a local hard drive
  8. Reboot into Clover FROM THE USB, put the same boot arguments, but this time, boot to the internal drive you just installed Sierra on.
  9. Follow user registration, log in, etc.
  10. Follow the MultiBeast steps mentioned in the normal guide: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...ierra-on-any-supported-intel-based-pc.200564/. DO NOT install any audio drivers. DO install the i7 SSDT.
  11. Once everything is booted normally and you have your graphics set up correctly, grab yourself a copy of Clover Configurator (downloads section)
  12. In Clover, set your boot args to have "dart=0 npci=0x2000 darkwake=2" and that's IT. Reboot if you'd like to test.
  13. At this point, you should have graphics, Ethernet, Bluetooth, and basic CPU working.
  14. Now its time for audio. Go here: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/p9x79-deluxe-audio-on-sierra.230894/
  15. Once you have audio working, you can start working on getting the CPU to follow its intended stepping curves - this will make your computer WAY more snappy/fast, and save you a ton of power and burn on your chip in the process. This is long and arduous so the steps were moved to a separate guide: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...idge-3930k-power-management-on-sierra.230927/
  16. Now you can set up iMessage by following this guide: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/an-idiots-guide-to-imessage.196827/. DO NOT change the SMBIOS board ID or system ID!!! This is paramount if you want to keep your power-managed CPU state. Just generate a UUID and use the simpleMLB tool.
  17. Ta-da! Enjoy your fully powered Custom Mac - I've been able to run stress tests in Maya, Houdini, and league that come within 5% performance of my windows side.
What's working:
  • Onboard Realtek Audio (front and back panels)
  • Bluetooth
  • Onboard Ethernet (both ports)
  • Full power management on the CPU (Turbo Boost, stepping, etc.)
  • GPU (via web drivers)
  • USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports
  • iMessage/FaceTime/etc.
What's not working:
  • (not tested) the on-board WiFi - it sucks anyway, if you need WiFi, grab a PCIe card
  • literally nothing else
Please don't hesitate to comment or message me with questions!

Hi Sacha. Thanks for your tuto.
I have a question for you: did you upgrade to 10.13 yet?
Cause here is my problem: I was in 10.12, all worked as a charm, and after upgrade to 10.13, my USB ports were in a mess. Only two USB 3.0 port are working. I think it comes from my DSDT, patched to work in 10.12 but I would know if someone (like you) have the same problem than me.

Can you share your EFI folder please?
Thanks in advance

Hello! Nice Job! I corrected my Sandy Bridge PM thanks to this guide. But still cannot have the USB 3.0 working. How did you make it?
Thanks!

Sandy Bridge motherboards do not have a USB 3 controller supported by macOS. See tonymacx86's thread > CustoMac Desktop USB Fixes- 10.11+ Reference. So, you'll need to turn off the motherboard's USB 3 in the BIOS. Then, if you still need USB 3, you'll need to get a PCIe USB 3 card with a compatible chipset. See this thread at the MacRumor's Mac Pro forum section > USB 3.x PCIe Cards for Classic Mac Pro.

Hello, I just switched from LGA 1155 to this X79 board, and I have some issue with Firewire. If my MOTU is on when turning on the computer, it's fine. But, if I switch to the MOTU after booting up, it is not recognized. I didn't had that kind of issue, may be it's related to this particular chipset, but I doubt that. Any idea ?

Hello! I have a similar configuration on my computer. But in my boot options I don't have the Secure Boot anywhere. How can I start my USB? Because every time I see only Windows starting...like it doesn't recognize the USB boot....I'm beating my head against walls :D

THis info about disabling the USB 3.0 on the Bios was crucial to get the booting process much smoothly.
I used to have lines such as “CMD WAITING… (opcode 0XF)…”
THank you Stork

GOT PowerManagement working on my Asus P9X79 pro i7-3820 according to this graphic

I patched the config.plist of Clover following this post
https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/t...dge-e-power-management-1013-appstore-release/
I have also enabled on the BIOS the Step Speeding for CPU.

Core temperatures used to be always around 49º Celsius

Would anyone more knowledgeable confirm me I did the right steps ?
Thanks

Almost done, but with MultiBeast I can't configure my SSD as boot one. It continues to boot from USB as if SSD is not recognized...........anyone can help me? thanks! :beachball:
