Splitting home folder-how complicated can I make this

So, I've got a nice working instal of 10.8.x on a 256 gb ssd. Planning to split the home folder to move pictures/downloads/documents/movies off the ssd.

What happens if, at some point, I have too many aps to fit on the drive? Can I have an alias in the applications folder on the SSD pointing to a folder on another drive so some of the apps are installed elsewhere?

I assume I just use sym links to connect the other folders from home to a traditional drive.

Presumably you want to keep the apps on the SSD to ensure fast response?

How about setting a fusion drive up instead of splitting your home folder and let ML do the task of optimising which apps/data should be on your SSD?

Could, I guess...fusion disks scare me just a bit. I hate having the stability of my system dependent on 2 devices working together. But I guess that's not much different from breaking up my home folder.
