Sound Control keys not working.

Hi there, i just finished my Mountain lion installation today..and it appears that the sound control keys are somehow not functioning as intended, using them triggers the visual indication but there is a small "prohibition sign" and the sound bar is not moving either right or left.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
In addition, I am using apple's wireless keyboard. Also, just noticed that when the headphones line out is selected the keys are functional : )
