The machine is in the shop, so I don't have access to the Motherboards identifying numbers. I see a lot of
[h=1]HP ProBook 4540S * Intel Integrated 2.4GHz Laptop Motherboard ** 712921-501
[/h]and
[h=3]HP ProBook 4440s 4441s 4540s 4740s 683495-601 Laptop Motherboard[/h]when I search ebay, and I don't know how important those numbers are "683495-601" and "712921-501". As you may have guessed, this is my first time attempting such an operation.

Am I crazy for trying this? Should I just purchase another new 4540s and hope it doesnt break in 6 months this time? A motherboard is under $100, and a new machine is closer to $400.

You might find details on the motherboard part# in your service manual.

Is it necessary I match it closely to do a swap? How closely?

Further clarity can be obtained by reading the service manual.

I have no service manual.

You can download it from hp.com.

It worked! And I was able to swap it out in like 2 hours! For anyone interested, follow this guide: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/how-to-disassemble-hp-probook-4540s/ and use the service manual to get through the final steps: http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c03758231-1.pdf

So here's my issue now, the laptop starts, and then says ""boot device not found" please install an operating system on your hard disk"

I have a copy of Clover Bootloader on a USB stick from my original installation. Can I use it to somehow orient the BIOS or whatever else so that it recognizes the hardrive? I'd be so thrilled if my not-so-recently backed-up data magically reappeared :clap:

I haven't figured out how to boot from the USB either. When I push esc, F9 for boot options, and choose the USB, I get the same message.

EDIT: Fixed! Just needed to choose the "
UEFI Hybrid with CSM" in BIOS.

Right as usual (about the ACPI files this time). RehabMan, it won't let me PM you because I havent posted enough, and apparently you're not staff. I'd like to say thanks with a $ donation thru paypal or bitcoin. Got any suggestions? Can you PM me an address?
