No sound on 10.8.4 even after HP ProBook Installer 6.1

removed /Extra/DSDT.aml

rebooted

reran Probook installer 6.1:
OS X Support kexts + 4x30s + mountain lion + 10.8.4

DSDT gen + Probook + 4x30s

optional patch + Atheros 9285

ran kext wizard + disk perms + kext cache rebuild

rebooted

sound device not detected in sys prefs .. menu volume controller greyed out

Some things to check:
- Make sure you don't have it disabled in BIOS
- Make sure you don't have VoodooHDA installed (how old is your install anyway, and how did you originally install?)
- Check that you have a DSDT in /Extra/dsdt.aml
- Do a fresh install 10.8.4 to an alternate partition just to verify (may be able to use fresh install as diff against /S/L/E)

Sound is fine in Win7 and LinuxMint on this machine.

Extensions dls$ pwd
/System/Library/Extensions
Extensions dls$ echo *ood*
VoodooPS2Controller.kext

Extra dls$ ls -l
total 120

Am happy to paste bootup log (dmesg?)

Are you booting using the Unibeast USB (and a very old one at that, since it is using Chimera 1.11.1) ???

There is a bunch of stuff loading from hd(0,1)/Extra/Extensions [normal for Unibeast USB]
Looks like your main partition (the one you're booting into) is on hd(1,2) [which is normal for HFS+ partition as first partition following EFI on HDD]

Yes, booting off a unibeast usb key
was originally set up via HP Probook Installer 5.1b1 Tegezee last November

You need to boot from the HDD. Unibeast is only a short-term solution to get the OS X Installer to run. It is not a long term solution to booting. Not only does it cause conflicts between kexts installed on the USB's /Extra/Extensions directory, but you're loading things that are not appropriate at all for a laptop (NullCPUPowerManagement, for example).

I suggest you use the ProBook Installer v6.1 to install Chameleon bootloader and begin booting from your HDD...

Yep, doing that now. No difference. What other log files or what else to try? I dont have the option to install to a different partition at this time.

Same thing now, bdmesg, etc... ioreg dump might be interesting. http://www.tonymacx86.com/audio/58368-guide-how-make-copy-ioreg.html

You can probably install OS X in 20GB or so...

Well.. I am out of ideas.. IORegistry Explorer crashes, even when I invoke it from /Applications.

If I do install to a different partition, Chimera should just pick up the two different Mac installs - right?

What besides kexts could I be looking at? What actually "makes" the sound device appear in the prefs panel?
