I am an idiot and finally fixed the sound on my system - unplug the USB Unibeast drive. Ie after you install, setup, reboot, run Multibeast pull the USB Unibeast drive out of the machine and keep it out.
Even though I was selecting other things than that to boot it was somehow getting involved in the boot process, which was killing the audio.
BTW I selected ALC887/ALC888b Legacy in Multibeast.
