Small SSD + HDD workeable?

I have an "old" 30GB ssd that runs Mac osx now on my desktop purely for imovie. Considering installing it into the 4530s and having the harddisk as secondary disk for data. I mainly want ssd to increase app launching and swap. Found a guide here that explains how to force osx stuff to hdd but wondering if there are experiences here. New ssd is out of budget at this time.

I use 30GB sad boot drive and have moved the home folder off to a 1TB JBOD. Works Fantastically. Although a 30GB might be limiting, I guess it will depend on the apps you have.

maybe it is best to start like this. can always buy bigger ssd in future.
