Just updated to 10.6.8 using combo update and multibeast 3.8.
It worked and and i can work, but the graphics are not functioning properly.

VLC and iphoto and youtube doesn't show picture, only a black screen.
Certain screen savers doesn't work, and the ones that work looks like 10 fps.
I must be missing something.
Oh yeah, i had to remove ATI5000Controller kext, or i could't boot.

My rig

GB X58 ud5 rev 2
Apple Ati 5770 with 2 DP, and 1 DVI
I7 930.

Any clues?

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

Are you using the chimera boot loader? If so, the frame buffer should automatically be set for that card.

Go into terminal and type "ioreg | grep ATY" and hit enter. Post here what you see.

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

Thanks cpukid.
Here's what i see.

| | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@0 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$
| | | | | +-o ATY_ATY,RadeonFramebuffer <class ATIFramebuffer, id 0x10$
| | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@1 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$
| | | | | +-o ATY_ATY,RadeonFramebuffer <class ATIFramebuffer, id 0x10$
| | | | +-o ATY,ATY,RadeonFramebuffer@2 <class AtiFbStub, id 0x1000003$
| | | | | +-o ATY_ATY,RadeonFramebuffer <class ATIFramebuffer, id 0x10$

No idea what it means.
I have another installation with 10.6.6, and i was gonna try and install these kexts.
ATI5000Controller.kext, ATIFramebuffer.kext & ATISupport.kext.
But i will hold of a bit.

Thanks

Nicolai

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

The default ATI frame buffer is being loaded, which isn't what you want.

Try installing Chimera from multibeast 3.8 to your boot drive. Once that's installed try booting again. If it's still laggy then open your boot.plist in /Extra and add this:

Code:
<key>AtiConfig</key>
<string>Duckweed</string>

Also make sure you have

Code:
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
	<string>Yes</string>

in there as well.

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

Thanks. I try what you said, but no dice.
I wonder it's related to this.

iMovie requires a graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme. One or more of your graphics cards does not support Quartz Extreme.

I think i am missing something.
I have a second bootdrive which runs 10.6.6 right now.
I was gonna update that to 10.6.7 and copy and install these kexts.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

Maybe i missed something, but the card used is a 5770, shouldn't he try the framebuffer Batmobile instead of Duckweed?

Last time i checked, Duckweed is for 6870 base cards.

and another thing, dont put anything in com.apple.boot.plist until you are 100% sure that is the correct needed info.

Try it a boot first by typing GraphicsEnabler=Yes, AtiConfig=Batmobile and then hit enter.

Here is more info, but i know, is a lot of reading!

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

Yeah, grtitan is right, don't use Duckweed as it's for 6xxx series cards.

However, I had weird problems with typing the GE=XXXX into Chimera. Once time, I typed one in and it was working great, but once I added it to the boot.plist it didn't work. I'm not sure why.

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

Hi Guys,

Had a feeling i screwed up somewhere along the way, so i decided to do a clean install.
And it seems all is well now.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

Cool!!
Glad that is working now.
Just change the subject description to solved.

Re: Sluggish Graphics.

I have a 6870 graphics card but everytime I try to set GraphicsEnabler to Yes, even using AtiConfig Duckweed, there's no signal from my system to the monitor. I'm sure the system boots because there's no kernel panic and if I adjust the sound using the apple keyboard, I can hear the sound. Does any one have any idea what the problem could be?

Maybe I will try a clean installation of Lion too.
