Sleep does not work: The system wakes up immediately after going to sleep

Status

Hi @Sthlm

It definitely sounds like the USB ports configuration problem, but see if the pmset -g log can give you any further detail. Try it with manual entry into sleep and again with automatic sleep.

I'm a bit confused by the events when the computer sleeps automatically. Is this correct:

1. Computer goes to sleep
2. Computer then wakes by itself, with the rig running, but no output to monitor
3. When keyboard is pressed or mouse is moved, there is output to monitor and you land in the user log in.

If that's the case, 2 & 3 usually happen with me because I don't have USBWakeFixup enabled. So I usually have to give two input steps to wake my computer from sleep. It sounds like there is some sort of phantom USB input to wake your rig, and it is waiting for the second input, as if USBWakeFixup isn't working properly.

Anyway, looking forward to the output of the pmset -g log command. I've gone through this and I agree that it can be very aggravating.

Ted
Hi, not sure exactly which part I should copy, so I took the last section.

Yup -- in both cases, it's the USB. Were you able to figure out the correct USBPorts kext to use?

Thank you very much for that clarification.

I haven't had the time yet to sit down and configure the USBPorts kext correctly but will post the result here as soon as I've done so.

I read somewhere that Thunderbolt ports does not count in the 15 port limit. I have an external Titan Ridge Thunderbolt card in my rig and the Thunderbolt ports from that appeared in the list of USB Ports in Hackintool. Can I leave these and limit only the other USB ports to 15?

The Thunderbolt USB ports will be served by a different USB controller, commonly designated as 'XHCn' e.g. XHC5 or something similar.

So they shouldn't be counted against the motherboards USB controller.

Each Controller has a 15 port limit, so the TB USB ports will be no where near the limit.

Hi,

I have now started over and reconfigured the USB Ports after the guide from UtterDisbelief.
I have attached the USBPorts.kext that I made. However, it has not solved the wakeup issue for me yet.

I have removed the USBInjectAll.kext from my EFI kext folder and from the kext list in OpenCore Configurator, replacing it with the new USBPorts.kext. I have also unticked the quirk XhciPortLimit (I have attached a screenshot).

When using the pmset –g log command in Terminal I still see that the USB seem to be the issue for the wake.

Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?

I don't think your new USBPorts.kext is configured correctly.
  • HS03, HS04, HS05, HS06, HS07 and HS09 are all set with Connector Type (0) USB2.
    • If any of these ports are served/provided from a physical USB3 connector, then they should be set with the connector type (3) USB3.
    • Only Physical (Black) USB2 ports should be set with the connector type (0) USB2.
  • Your Thunderbolt ports are not included in the setup.
  • You have HS01 set with connector type (10) and SS01 with connector type (9).
    • If these two ports are from the same physical Type-C connector then they should be set with the same connector type.
  1. How many external USB devices do you have connected to your system?
  2. Have you tried disconnecting them all, except the mouse/keyboard and Bluetooth?
  3. Does this change how your system behaves?
  4. Can you post a screenshot showing the Hackintool > USB tab for with all your normal devices connected.

Hi,

  • Thank you for the info regarding the connector types. I have changed that now.
  • I could see my Thunderbolt ports earlier (the ones from my GC-Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 card), but they did not appear in Hackintool when I started over and used the USBInjectAll.kext, so they are not included currently. Do you know how to add them to the USB list in Hackintool? What should probably be said is that my LG Ultrafine 5K monitor which is connected thru one of the GC-Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 ports works even though there are no Thunderbolt Ports listed in my USB Port Configuration.
  • I have now changed the HS01 to the same connector type as SS01.
  1. The only externally connected USB device I have is my USB Receiver for my Logi mouse and keyboard connected to the HS04 port. I have an NZXT USB 2.0 hub connected to the internal HS11 port as I did not have enough internal USB ports (only 2 internal ports on my Z490 Vision D) for my CPU Cooler (1), WiFi/Bluetooth Card (2) and my GC-Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 Card(3).
  2. As written above, I only have my mouse/keyboard connected externally. Do I need to do something with the NZXT USB 2.0 Hub?
  3. See answers above.
  4. See attached screenshot.

You've had a lot of help previously in this thread, so I'm not sure I can add anything new, however here are my observations:

1) Connecting your internal Bluetooth module by a "Hub" of any kind will cause your problem. If you plug it directly to a USB2 motherboard header (there are 4x I believe) and still see it as on a hub then there is a configuration error.

2) Take care with the port mapping. @Leesureone gave you the easiest option - use the pre-made USB configuration from @CaseySJ 's build.

3) Things I can see on the Gigabyte spec page reinforces what @Edhawk explained about the Thunderbolt controller. You have 3x Type-C ports, 2x of which - on the back panel - are Thunderbolt so on a different controller. There's an internal one too.

You have 2x USB2 only ports on the back panel and likely they are low HS** numbers so your connector-type should show accordingly.

Crux of the matter is to get the 20702 Bluetooth chip showing as a root USB device, not on a hub. A little confusing because it can act as one itself in certain configs. Never the less it should be showing as "Parent" not "Child" in the tree, if possible. The best way to show us your configuration is with an exported IORegistryExplorer v2.1 export file - *.ioreg etc.

Hi, thank you for your comment.

1. I moved the cable of the Bluetooth and Wifi add-in card from the NZXT hub (which is a hub connected to the 2 left HS11 hub ports - port 2 and 4 I believe they are named) directly into one of the HS11 ports. But as I understand HS11 is a 4 x USB header hub on the motherboard, so the Bluetooth and Wifi card still have to pass by a hub? If not to HS11, where should I otherwise run it as there are no other internal USB headers on my motherboard?

2. I will try out the USB port configuration provided by CaseySJ.

3. Yes, that's correct. However, I can not see the SSP1 or SSP2 ports in Hackintool under the USB tab when trying to configure the USB ports from scratch, following your guide. Do you know how I can get these visible again?

I managed to export an .ioreg file from IORegistryExplorer v2.1, but it includes the serial number of my build, which I understand should not be shared here if possible? I took a screenshot of the HS11 tree. If that is not enough I can send the .ioreg-file to you in private. Please let me know if so is the case.

Yes, it is an issue with your particular motherboard that the four USB ports, on the two 9-pin USB2 headers at the edge of the motherboard under the third PCI-e slot, are actually a single-port hub. HS11 is the one you've specced for Bluetooth in your USBPorts kext and it is also the one @CaseySJ uses in his Z490 Vision D build with an SSDT.

Interestingly - and it might be relevant to the sleep/wake issue - HS12 is used by the internal iTE chipset which controls the RGB Fusion set-up. However you have not enabled this port in your 15 so I think it needs making live.

As @jaymonkey asked earlier, and you replied, the AIO water-cooler needs a connection too. I can't see that in the Hackintool screen you posted at #27 so we're in the dark as to which one you are using. It needs setting as Internal anyway.

So what to do next?

1) I'd re-enable HS12 as Internal for the iTE chipset. @CaseySJ has allocated it and, although on a different port, so did I in my own Z490 build.

2) Set the port for your AIO as Internal.

3) Bear in mind when USB2 headers are on a hub like yours, they are actually only 1x port, the root port. A difficult concept to grasp sometimes, but as @CaseySJ shows in the diagrams in his build description, all four ports branch off from HS11. So you might make sure the NZXT hub is disconnected from the header.

Not sure my appraisal helps, but change and allocate as outlined and test to see if it improves sleep/wake.

:)
