Skype is never perfect, but 99% of the time it works for me in Windows. Occasionally the other end will hear some breaking up but it typically works. I do open a port in the firewall for UDP to come through and set it in Skype.
Under OSX though, forget it. It is constantly giving me robotic voice on both ends and completely unreliable. Looking at Call Technical Information I see UDP Local: Bad and Remote:Bad. I call my friend on Skype (he uses OSX) and we talk for 1-4 hours a couple of times a week.
When I was using Windows, we rarely had problems and he always used OSX.
Now I am using OSX, I am having constant problems, to the point I can't use it.
I am not using OSX Firewall software and using a Juniper Firewall with a single UDP port open for Skype (listed in Skype config for dedicated port).
I hear lots of people complain about Skype on OSX, but this seems ridiculous and I doubt this is typical.
