Just wondering if anyone has any clue about the compatibility of Skylake Xeons - I'm looking to build a rig with a Xeon E3 1240 V5, and I'm currently quite hesitant as to whether or not it'll work. I'm intending to use MacOS Sierra for this build.

My Build:

  • CPU:
option 1 - Xeon E3 1240 V5
option 2 - Xeon E3 1230 V5
option 3 - i7 6700K

  • Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H170N-Wifi (MITX)
  • RAM: Corsair CMK16GX4M1B3000C15 16GB x1 Vengeance LPX DDR4 (Will be adding a second stick mid 2017)
  • Cooler: Corsair H55 AIO
  • PSU: Corsair SF600 600 watt Fully Modular
  • Graphics: EVGA GTX 760 ACX 2GB GDDR5
  • SSD: Samsung EVO 850 250GB (OS DRIVE)
  • HDD: Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 2.5 inch (BACKUP, STORAGE AND SCRATCH DISK)
  • Case: SilverStone SG13B

I know that the mobo will work with a few alterations, such as a new wifi card chipset. Just wondering is anyone has any advice at all about Skylake Xeon's?

First step - check the CPU and memory support list for the board that you are thinking of purchasing. Put the CPU models in to search does no yield any answers. They might work on a compatible board although extra work may be required like with celeron and Pentium processors.

The i7 6700 and 6700K are probably a better bet especially if you go for a Z170 board with an 8 pin CPU power socket to allow greater overclocking potential - the Z170N-wifi is only a basic over clocking board.

Check if RAM is on the board manufactures list. If not go with something that is.

Check the length of your EVGA GTX 760 for fitment inside the case. Looks like the max size is approx 10.5 inches or 267mm.
