Hello Community,

I may try to build a Hackintosh for Music Production. Therefore I have as Audio Hardware an Apollo 8 quad from the Company Universial Audio. They work with Thunderbolt and Mac only.

My Idea was to build a new Hackintosh machine. I really like the new Motherboards with TB3 Support. Like the GA-Z170X-UD5 TH. I was just wondering if someone already managed to get the Tunderbolt from this Mainboard make run under Mac OS.

It must not be this specific Motherboard, but I would like to go for Skylake. Windows 10 on one SSD and Mac OS on another one....

Thx for your help!

I'm on the same issue here. I need a Mac for sound design/mixing, and NEED thunderbolt because of mine UAD interface.

As I've been researching around, and Thunderbolt 3/USB3.1 are not supported by OSX, yet. Will be supported when Apple build a computer with TB3. Let's see.

I got this info here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/buying-ad...d-thunderbolt-3-vs-thunderbolt-expansion.html

There aren't any officially recommended motherboards for Z170/Skylake yet even though the platform is mostly stable (according to the Skylake Testing Thread). It might change for the February buyer's guide, maybe not. Right now it looks like the big holdups are missing/incomplete drivers for the Skylake integrated GPU (all of the Skylake iMacs have Radeon GPUs) and some USB port mapping issues.

I've been looking at that same board myself, and after doing a little research it seems like a good candidate for a build since it uses no third party interfaces aside from Realtek audio. All the SATA ports are Intel standard, all the USB ports are provided by the Intel chipset, the Ethernet is Intel, the Thunderbolt/USB 3.1 controller is Intel's stock DSL6540 (Alpine Ridge) controller. It seems like the cleanest Z170 board available.

TB3 and USB 3.1 don't work under OS X yet and probably will not until Apple ships a machine that has TB3 support.

If you don't buy a board with an integrated TB3 controller, there will probably be PCI-E cards in the future that can provide it, but they will probably have small production runs and be a pain to find.

I hope this happens soon.

I am interested in this too.

I don't think I really need Thunderbolt 3, as TB 2 itself is blazingly fast but hey, faster is always better in computing.

That said - Can you find any hackintosh compatible MOBO's which support Thunderbolt (which are available now)?

That's the big problem, right now. I'm not super excited about Thunderbolt 3, and I surely could build one with Tb2.

BUT, it's been impossible to find Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD7 TH, the only MB available with onboard Tb2 inputs. Some can make the Asus or Gigabyte Thunderbolt PCI Card work, but it's a big risk and normally it doesn't run smoothly. :(

It seems, for now, that people that NEED Thunderbolt and wants a Hackintosh are completely out of options. :banghead:

hi guys, new guy here...

i want to build a skylake hackingotsh for music too - and thunderbolt is a good option for the future.
I have no thunderbolt right now...

BUT in the future, do you think the GA-Z170 UD5 will work with thunderbolt devices?
Specifically I want to use the UAD thunderbolt audio systems.

What are my chances that TB3 WILL in the future work?

Hmmm... maybe question seems answered, but still confused about backwards compatibility etc...
I don't think UAD devices are TB3? I guess they are Tb1? tb2?

cheers guys

uad thunderbolt devices will work on TB1 and TB2.. you will just need an adaptor for the TB2 cable. Unfortunately there is no way to test, because currently uad Thunderbolt is Mac only.. and OSX doesn't know what USB 3.1 or TB3 even is yet...

i am in the same boat, I am speccing out a mATX build and need thunderbolt 2 for a UAD Apollo. I am looking at the Gigabyte Gaming 5 one, which currently has the USB 3.1 and port.. they recently firmware update all the ATX boards in that line to TB3... so I am hoping the mATX board also gets firmware updated... so it would be maybe future proof?

Ok, then let me ask like this...
Is there z170 with TB1 or 2??

Also, if I understand right - as long as TB3 is recognized in OS X - then the UAD should work with a converter cable TB2 to TB3?

And lastly, what is the difference between usb 3.1 and TB3? The gigabyte board has TB3? I thought the new MacBooks have usb 3.1?

Thanks guys
