Security Update 2021-001 Catalina, Security Update 2021-001 Mojave

Question for the veterans on here: I’ve heard that those of us who plan to stay on Catalina for the next two years should not necessarily update Clover, as forthcoming kexts, drivers, etc., from Clover are geared towards Big Sur. I‘d like to hear any opinions out there about this based on what has happened in the past when an OS entered the 「security updates only」phase of its existence. Those of us who plan to stay on Catalina for the next two years, might it be as simple as just clicking update in 「system preferences」 every time w/o having to update clover or kexts? To the customac veterans, what do your crystal bells tell you based on the journey thus far?

Older boot loaders can’t support newer macOS versions; newer boot loaders can support older macOS versions.

If you want to stay with Catalina, updating your boot loader won’t bring any benefit unless you have already had issues.

@LoveAppleTimmu - If you're staying with Catalina AND CLOVER and you can still apply the supplemental Catalina updates (not being released as full installer packages), my advice is to stay with CLOVER r5119.

I'm prepping my main system for Big Sur (plan to migrate my production environment from Catalina to Big Sur with BS 11.4). I just applied the latest Catalina updates to my rig booting with OC 0.6.5 and now 0.6.6. I was a diehard CLOVER fan and only switched to OC because it was too cumbersome for me to maintain two EFIs for my Guides. The Catalina update was easy. No issues.

My Z97 Clover 4934 updated, but on the restart it the progress bar slowly got to full and just sat there. Had to reboot, and halts on boot again.
To make a long story short, reboot on update was loading from the install Mojave partition (blind) and grinding to a halt. By hitting the space bar at start and selecting the actual boot volume all was good again I am watching for strange reboot behavior regarding volume selection, which is probably a setup issue not an update issue.

===> Space bar and get the correct volume.

@Mike_S when you have finished the update, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and make sure the disk you want to use as the default boot disk is selected.

I have Big Sur on one drive and Catalina on another. With Catalina set as my default boot drive. I first updated Catalina, then updated Big Sur to 11.2. As part of the Big Sur update it changed my default boot disk to Big Sur. I had to change this back to Catalina. Otherwise OpenCore booted in to Big Sur whenever I started/rebooted the system.

This update has been surprisingly painful for me. I'm on the GA-Z77X-UD5H and I've had frequent kernel panics since the update. They seem to come after the system's been up for a little bit of time and maybe had some time to idle, but it's crashed in the middle of use as well. Here's the kernel panic log dug out of DiagnosticReports:

All the kernel panics are crashing in PerfPowerService. I have Clover 5128 installed and the system had otherwise been perfectly stable for the past few weeks with no other kext/bootloader changes.
