About This Build
My desktop Computer, used mainly for Photography and Video creation , some gaming and seeing what i can make it do. It will spend 70% of its time in OS X, 20% in Windows and 10% in Ubuntu, It has to be stable in all OS's used and QUIET most of the time ( overclocking to a rock steady 4.8 Produces lots of fan noise but does not get above 85decC Clocked at 4.2 it is as quiet as a Mac Pro and never exceeds 65DegC)
While this is not my first Hackintosh, it is the first to use mostly new top end equipment. the rest have been old PC's and Old Net & Notebooks
For all intents and purposes I was able to get this system fully functioning, minus native cpu powermanagement. Still NO DSDT used. (next on the list)
OpenCL works Out of Box, Both VGA HDMI Audio Controllers are supported Out of Box,
I use a modified (by Ksosx86) VoodooHDA 2.7.4 for ALC 898 audio, and his VoodooTSCSync kext modified to
work with the 3930K, IOCPUNumber=11.
OSX Installation Guide
-Step 1) Create a bootable USB drive from your Mac App Store purchased copy of the "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" by using "UniBeast - Mountain Lion".
-Step 2) Once Unibeast has finished creating your bootable USB drive, place all the modified and extra kexts in the SLE directory
and suitable smbios and chameleon.boot files in the Extra directory. ( reason for this step is that My System would right Royaly spit the dummy if done otherwise)
-Step 3) Boot your system from Unibeast, and install Mountain Lion, make sure you're installing to a partition/drive that's using "GUID Partition Table/GPT", not "Master Boot Record/MBR".
-Step 4) Once your installation is finished, reboot. Once the system loads, fill out the setup wizard accordingly, and Reboot.
-That's it, enjoy your ASRock Extreme6 X79 build on Mountain Lion.3!
Testing
Temps 1 after 24hrs prime test (OC at 4.4x104) dropped to 3.2 under Stress
2 after 24Hrs Normal use (OC at 4.4x104)
Notes
-CPU Powermanagement: Currently there is no native cpu power management for LGA 2011 boards, Nullcpupowermanagement.kext is required.
-Multi-Core Support: There is no "out of box" multi-core/HT support VoodooTSCSync.kext for them to work.
-Graphics: The 10.8.3 Drivers for Nvidia GTX670 and CUDA are installed (gotten from the Nvidia site)
-Sleep Mode: Sleep works 100% with the use of SleepEnabler.kext, and the boot flag "darkwake=0" .Be sure to have "Deep Sx" set to "Disabled" in your motherboard's BIOS. If enabled, it will conflict and cause problems.
-LPC Support: a modified copy of AppleLPC,
-USB 3.0: For full USB 3.0 support, install the kexts from ASMedia1042 10.8 USB3.0.zip
-Trim Support: Launch the TrimEnabler app and set the slider to the "on" position, then reboot and you'll have working Trim support on all SSDs.
-Onboard Audio: a modified copy of the "2.7.4 VoodooHDA", Specifically tailored it for this board *ALC898 codec*, it works just fine in both 16 & 24bit. There's no tearing, popping, or hissing issue with it. Thanks to Ksosx86
-HDMI Audio: use the EnableHDMI audio flags in the bootloader's boot plist. Mountain Lion supports quite a few if not all mainstream video cards' HDMI audio controllers with vanilla AppleHDA.
-Bootloader: Personally, I'm using the latest "Chimera" build hosted here at Tonymac
-Ethernet: The onboard Broadcom BCM57781 controller works 100% with the "IONetworkingFamily.kext" attached at the bottom.
Overclock: 4.2 GHz @ 1.25v ( My system is able to run prime95 and cinebench for 24hrs non-stop at 4.8 Ghz overclock without exceeding 85DegC But my ears sufferd.. those Delta fans are NOISY and Loud when pulling 150CFM each at 3900RPM through the Radiator)
Build Problems
Install USB needed to have the final smbios, chameleon in Extra and all the Final kexts in SLE to boot up and Install Properly ?????
HDA not fully support the ALC898 and Not the Xonar DG cmi8786
Not being able to get raid working on either the Intel or Marvell for OSX
LG BluRay BH16NS40
1. If installed on the ASMedia ports it opens the tray at boot if empty and refuses to work in OSX, ok in Windows
2. If installed on the Marvell 9230 Controller Windows thinks its a SCSII CDROM with power problems and wont work, ok in OSX
So save yourself some hair and install it on one of the Intel C600 SATAII ports it works properly in Windows and OSX if placed there.
The original fans on the TD02 Water Cooler really could not keep it cool at full stroke, they were replaced with Delta fans.
The Delta AFB1212SHE Fans are as quiet as the Silverstones at low revs but pull twice the Air, but when the Heat builds up so does the noise from these fans, at half speed the are about as loud as the silverstones at full speed, at full speed they are almost twice as loud.
(they are pulling 300CFM of air at full, The Silverstones only pulled 120CFM (not the 90 each claimed))
The Tundra TD02 was a lot easier to fit than a lot of those HUGE Kg+ coolers some people use.
Modifications since Build time
1. 2.5 SSD, 3.5 Raptor and 60cm fan mounted in 5.25 bay adapter (Fusion) then placed behind front panel
2. 2.5 WD Blue, Old 3.5 and 60cm fan mounted in 5.25 bay adapter (Windows 8 and Ubuntu) then placed behind front panel
3. Delta Fans turned into SUCK mode, blowing hot air over the PWM wasnt a good idea, Top cover Filter and most of the plastic crossbars removed to reduce noise resonance
4. 60cm Fan placed over PWM to force air over it.
5. PCie to USB3 adapter, So I could have 6 3.0 ports at the front
6. 2 of the 2tb Segates software OSX Mirrored and the other as ExFat for Sharing Files between all three OS's
7. Upgrade to 10.8.4
Fusion drive screwed up during upgrade, System now running, Main OS on SSD, Caches and temp on Ramdrive, working Data on Raptor, and rest (including RamDrive load stuff) on Raid (mirror). It only adds 1 sec to startup time and 3 to shutdown time. New HDD test pics included (Disk Speed Test just did not know how to handle the speed look at all those Negative numbers
8. Changed over to HDA audio thanks to http://www.tonymacx86.com/audio/55638-interim-realtek-ivy-bridge-lion-applehda.html
-MultiBeast configuration.
