Hi guys

I’ve installed Big Sur, all is well except I can’t restart my computer

If I power it off and start it, then it boots fine but whenever I use the restart option it crashes part way through the boot process (see screenshots attached)

Any ideas on how to resolve this ?

Cheers

TK
Big Sur v11.6.1
OC v6.4 (same problem on later versions)

Noticed something odd. Even after the 'crash' message, if I unplug and replug the usb devices, the log updates (on the screen), it still fails to boot though, but I wonder if it's something to do with the USB kext ?

Not the end of the world but good to solve it, if poss.

What bootloader are you using? Is it Clover? If so you need to update the bootloader plus any associated kexts esp. Lilu, Whatevergreen, VirtualSMC and AppleALC.

Also try to check for any deprecated kexts or settings you currently have in your setup.

Another thing you can do is go to opencore.slowgeek.com to do a sanity check with your config.plist.

Ran opencore.slowgeek.com
Everything ok except my config.plus was set to 18,1 so renamed it to 14,4 using symbios.command but got the same issue rebooting
All other checks are fine
Cold startup works fine

The error in the two screen images are I believe USB related. The second image is showing the 'Still waiting for root device' error', which usually appears when a USB port is not handed-over from the bios to the OS's control.

Are you booting from an external USB drive?

Have you configured your USB ports to work with macOS, i.e. read and followed this guide by UtterDisbelief - https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/the-new-beginners-guide-to-usb-port-configuration.286553/

Thanks Edhawk,

I'm not booting from an external drive, I am booting from a internal SSD but will read the guide and see if I can make some progress

Cheers

TK :)

Have you copied the OpenCore EFI folder from your USB pen drive to the EFI partition on the macOS SSD? Or are you still booting from the OpenCore setup on your USB installer?

You may need to disconnect any USB devices, other than your keyboard and mouse. Then reboot after adding as single device back in to the system, do this for each device to see which one or which port is causing this issue.
