Looks like 10.14.6 has changed this to generic ssd controller also;

My PM981 NVME reports as generic. If I have any of the partitions formatted for OSX, it crashes after a few minutes. While its running, the speed are fast according to Blackmagic benchmark. Sadly it crashes..... I have to rely on the much slower non M2 SSD.

I have this same problem, I have 2 m.2 and they both shows as generic controller and my machine randomly freezes, no mouse etc and no logs... did you find a fix? I didn't want to use a slower ssd on a sata port

showing up as generic in system profile as well.

I have Samsung NVMe 970 EVO 250GB and the controller is Generic (under Mojave 10.14.6). My Samsung disk is very slow, only 800/800 read/write speed. System Information > NVMExpress shows Link Width: x4 and Link Speed: 2,5 GT/s
My disk is very slow and laggy.

Mine says Generic as well, but as you can see it isn't affecting performance. It's slower than when I installed it in December, but not by much, lol.

@psedog Your Link speed: is 8 GT/s, mine is only 2,5 GT/s. I have no idea why. Maybe thats why my disk is so laggy. Any ideas?

That is probably the problem. You are running at PCIe 1.0, not 3.0 speeds. Is that NVMe slot sharing with a Sata drive? Edit: I looked up your motherboard and you only have one NVMe. Doesn't look like it has a Sata port share.
