Background: Two years and 13K views later since starting my 2006 20" iMac mod I finally found the motherboard I was looking for. Other builds and much procrastinating later I found 'The One' on eBay, I watched it for weeks until the price dropped, then clicked 'BUY IT NOW'. It was a package, Mobo, CPU, CPU fan, RAM and Intel wireless/BT card included. I was unsure, could this board really handle a i5-9600K?, that CPU cooler surely can't keep that 'K' cool, If it was someones gaming build in a previous life, is it burnt out?. Luck was on my side, When it arrived I plugged in my Windows 11 SSD and breathed a sigh of relief as it loaded up, it worked.

ASUS Prime H310T R2.0: The *10 chipset motherboards have recently fascinated me since the discovery of the 'Thin Mini ITX' platform. I already own a Gigabyte H110MSTX, I like the stacked M.2 slots, it's 140mm X 140mm form factor but most of all, the M.2 socket, E key, which you can plug a GPU into via an ADT Link R53SR cable, an RX 560 is perfect for this. The H310T is classed as a 'business' motherboard, I think that means it has a range of applications from digital signage to... I'm not sure. But 'business' is reflected in the variety of ports and headers, like an onboard LVDS slot, low profile ram and a moisture resistant coating to protect it from harsh environments, like say an office, David Brent's office.

i5-9600K: This would be the most powerful intel chip I've owned, six cores and six threads, pure gaming. Intel UHD Graphics 630, compatible with macOS Ventura no less and 4K 4096x2304 @60Hz with DP and eDP - integrated flat panel, but only @24Hz for HDMI. While I had Windows 11 installed I tried out Destiny 2 and was impressed with the performance, good frame rates, nice textures and smooth. Can the CPU cooler handle it?, Idk, it's quiet and gets the temperature down quickly, but I did abort a 10 minute CineBenchR23 run when the temperature hit 98 C.

ADT Link R53SR: First discovered by @phunguss after raising the question 'Can we get graphics from the M.2 E Key on a H110MSTX motherboard?'. External eGPUs for laptops were all the rage, it looked a mess but it worked, would it work on a desktop?. Yes!.

Fenvi USB Wifi: This is where things start to get interesting. I already planned to use Ethernet for my network connection, my RX560 was plugged into the M.2 E key which didn't leave me many options for Wifi. My Fenvi and EDUP USB3 Wifi adapters hadn't worked since Catalina, sure there is a way to do it by disabling SIP in Recovery and I have done it, but I'm not happy with compromising my builds security and it was a headache. I had a backup M.2 SSD that I used for my Mini Cube with Catalina 10.15.7 installed and I got it to boot with Clover 5119. The Fenvi AC1300U driver was already installed and both Wifi Adapters worked. I put together a EFI based on my H110MSTX folder and installed it onto my Monterey 12.3.1 USBs EFI, after getting to the installer, instead of opening Disk Utility and easing the disk for a clean install, I went straight to installation, upgrading from Catalina and saving important data!. When Monterey finished installing, I updated to 12.4 through system preferences and rebooted, the Fenvi turned on half way through boot and has been working nicely for the past few days. Below is an image from HackinDROM showing the RtWlanU 1830.32.b12 as 'Running', but it's not in my EFI folder it's somewhere in the System, and the result from the grep command in Terminal.

Update 6/15. You still have to disable SIP for it to work!, after some fiddling about with my plist and OpenCore's 0.8.0 > 0.8.1 differences, I realized that disabling SIP in OC boot picker, booted the USB WiFi. We still have the necessary kext in some folder some where, but it only works when disabling SIP.

Installation

BIOS: Always a good idea to refer to Dortania's OpenCore install guides, especially useful BIOS info. I pretty much found all of these in my BIOS settings, even CFG Lock and DVMT. Having DVMT available meant I just needed to add two lines to 'device properties' in my config.

Installation: Never a problem, I booted Catalina from Clover 5119 and Updated to Monterey 12.4 from OpenCore 0.8.0. Progress was quick, a couple of missteps at the beginning but after that straight forward, just like a real Mac.

EFI: My folder structure.
Screen Shot 2022-06-20 at 9.36.03 PM.png

SMBIOS: I chose iMac19,2, (accidentally), even though the 9600K is officially iMac19,1. I might change it and see what it benches. iMac17,1 benched at Sc 1081/Mc 5207.

[Update 6/10] Changed the SMBIOS to iMac19,1 and noticed improvements on boot, looks better also.

Network: This has surprised me, both BT and Wifi are available through USB3 dongles, (if you disable SIP in OC boot picker). But Ethernet works perfectly.

Sound: I haven't tested yet, will get back to you.

Sleep/Wake: Nothing to see here.

Temperature: The only time I got concerned was during a CineBenchR23 run, when it hit 98 C and I aborted the Bench. Other than that this little CPU fan is holding up well.

Changed the CPU cooler, now using the Thermaltake Engine 27. I have been using this cooler in my Mini Cube mod for an i7-7700T, its amazingly quiet and looks good. And a lot better at keeping the i5-9600K within sensible operating temperatures, it only hit 86 C when benching in CinebenchR23!.

I haven't mentioned what's powering my Recycled Build. I'm using a Dell 180W AC adapter, specifically used for Optiplexes.

There was a incident today!, the build fell from a height of 3 ft onto a tiled floor. Bent it, but amazingly everything still works, obviously a drop test isn’t something I’d recommend, the fact it survived speaks volumes!.

The Delta built Dell PSUs are always the best. Use them all the time. Never any problems.

Something I discovered in BIOS (confirmed after reading the manual), was the ability to switch from SATA mode to PCIe x2 mode. Fortunately I had my faithful Kingspec NE-128 lying around homeless, installed Monterey 1st time. Speeds aren't great, more like a souped up SATA drive, but it's nice to have options.

Might I suggest NFC Skyreach Tiny expanded for a case to prevent further damage? Also, I have H310T and H410T's, some new, if any are interested and will sell low... Also, now that HDplex no longer sells 19V P.S.'s my thin ITX build dreams are least frequent, I hate bricks. But if you must have a brick, SlimQ has GaN bricks at 230 watts that will power all the way up to the H610T. I have a H410T in a NFC tiny with a 400 watt HDPlex internal dual booting Win 11 and Monterey 12.4 using Intel Graphics from a 10th gen I7T.

You've just been spotlighted. Expect more views and questions about your build.

Looks like if you remove the cooler mount, and then remove the motherboard metal backplate, you might be able to get it straight again. A risk I know!
