Rebranding the Atheros 928x cards - The guide

If you rebranded as Intel it can be difficult to recover. I did it but had to make more changes to the iwleeprom code. I forget exactly what. Hopefully you are familiar with C programming. Otherwise purchase another card. They are inexpensive.

Well, I am disappointed at myself, I missed a perfect re-branding with one digit! I do understand C.
I did built the ath9k with philip_petev instruction, and the card is being detected, but naturally no ip, or anything else.
I find the code that the "err" is coming, but no comments what so ever,...
If you remember what you did please share it, intellectually speaking I like to learn it. And you are right I end up buying a new one in couple of weeks when I am back to US.

Thanks Rehabman,

Thanks Rehabman,

Once the vendor-id is changed to other than Atheros, more changes to the Linux code are required.

Sorry, I forget the details, but with a bit of searching and debugging you can probably figure it out (look for 168c, which is the vendor-id of Atheros).

Hi Rehabman,

Just to let you know, I got another card, rebranded it and using a dsdt definition for the Atheros card and your AR...FakePCIID adding my intel device in two places got it working. In fact I am typing this using ths rebranded card...

Thank you for include me in the credits i was banned right after the post of the "guide" :-X

Your card obviosly seems to be working great in Mac, but what is happening in windows?, the driver detect it like an ar9285 does work ok?, a modification of the driver can be done for that, but my doubt is about another IDs that can be work in our 4530s. I found this in the win driver:

HP laptop
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_001C&SUBSYS_303F103C --> "Qualcomm Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter"

PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0036&SUBSYS_217F103C --> "Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter"

BTW: I rebrand with this method an Acer ar9285, and a Sony (AIO) AR5B195. No problem at all.

Hi Philip,

Can you or maybe someone else in this thread please let me know what IDs I would have to use in orde to have this Card accepted by my Lenovo T430i (Core i5-3320m vPRO)? For some info or even hints I would be very grateful. Yes I know I could go through the pain of trying to hardware flash my UEFI with a modded one which does not contain a whitelist but this goes a bit into the extreme, there has to be a way to get this card to be accepted by the T430i :( Please help...

You could rebrand the AR9280 with the IDs from a card known to be acceptable to your laptop, then use FakePCIID to get it to work in OS X even though the IDs are all wrong...

If the rebrand is extreme (eg. not from the same vendor/family)... within Windows, you would need to use USB WiFi as there is no FakePCIID tricks that can be employed in Windows.

@Rehabman,@PHILIP

I really need, some help from you bro....

I just rebrand my AR5B95 (168C:002B sub 105B : E016) into AR9380 (168C:0030 sub 103C:1627), to passing whitelist from my HP8460P, ...with System Information App, my card now detected As AR9300 wireless lan...but still not working in my sierra..

what should i do ?

I successfully rebranded my atheros 9285 to the ID quoted in the post below to work in my Lenovo T430. Good news for me that it works on Windows too without any adjustments.

Thanks RehabMan.

168c:002b:17aa:30a1

Simple AR9280 rebrand as AR9285 (with the Lenovo sub-ids of 17aa:301a)...

If it passes the whitelist (assuming biosmods is accurate), then it should be able to work with a simple injector kext (such as toledaARPT.kext).
