I didn't have this problem on my old 23" 1080p monitor. Now I get a kernel panic, and it seems to be randomly. I can recreate the problem when launching a specific game, which is graphically more intensive. The rest of the times, it will at some random point cause my system to reboot.

System specs, i7 4790k, asus strix GTX 970, asus sabertooth z97 mk2, El Capitan 10.11.3 (15D21), monitor is ACER x34.

One of the kernel panic logs:

In other logs last loaded kexts vary, altho often it is com.apple.filesystems.msdosfs. Cpu # vary. Kernel Extensions in backtrace are same.

Possible causes of the problem and fixes done:

1) Virtual box kexts have known to cause trouble.

- Removed virtual box, and uninstalled kexts.

2) HWMonitor GPU and CPU sensor kexts have caused random errors in similar cases.

- Removed HWmonitor and uninstalled kexts.

3) USB hubs sometimes has caused problems to me in the past.

- USB hub is not attached, kernel panic still occurs.

4) USB microphones have known to cause problems in similar systems.

- USB mic is not attached, kernel panic still occurs.

4) Problem occurs with Display Port and HDMI.

- Tested both Display port and HDMI. Can cause kernel panic loading a specific intensive game. Haven't tested with DVI.

5) G-Sync technology is causing it.

- Have anyone else experienced problems with adaptive sync technology in their monitors? It's the only possible explanation I have left. But it shouldn't affect the system stability from my understanding.

Installed Windows. Helped me figure out it might be a problem of CPU overheating. But I am still not 100% guaranteed. My GPU does some squeaking sounds sometimes under stress, so it could also be a faulty GPU/heatsink.

Any input you may have that I may have not thought of is more than welcome.

Solution (unconfirmed): Downclocking the Memory clock 100MHz on the GPU has made the system stable (Windows). Will report with more testing tomorrow on OS X.

Can anyone chip in some light into this issue who may understand more about it? Should I return the card if the base memory clock seems to be defective / not working properly?

My Hackintosh system is around the same spec. I just swap out my 4K display for the Acer X34 Predator just last week. As soon as I started up OS X, the image on the screen froze. Somehow, the hard disk light is still flashing, which means things are still working under the hood. but no matter what I do, unplugging all USB devices, swap out to HDMI cable, etc., nothing seems to work. Booted up up Windows 10, and everything is fine. Sigh. I don't really anticipate a problem with a monitor change, and I really like this 21:9 aspect ratio. Any suggestions?
