I've been having these random crashes with rebooting in Yosemite.

My specs are:
Gigabyte Z97X Gaming GT
4096MB Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970
Intel Core i7 4790K
32GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600 DIMM (4x8GB)

I've read all I could find online. Should I just upgrade to El Capitan?

I also think the crashes happen when I'm using Safari ...

Thanks for the help!

As I presume you know one always has to do the drill to see if random freezes are hardware or software related. This is easier in dual boot systems.
Safari may be the worst browser ever, well Edge is pretty bad too, but it should not take down the OS.
I presume you have been running Yosemite for a while (you are not missing much in the soon to be replaced El Cap) and probably with Chameleon. If you have not made hardware or software changes your problem may not be the OS.
If you have not used Clover and want to upgrade past Yosemite I would make sure there isn't an underlying hardware problem, use a different drive and understand the several well written guides on this website about creating Unibeast, using Clover (e.g. how to insert boot flags) and settings for Multibeast.

Yosemite and Clover yes.

But I think I found the problem. I had 6 4TB drives in software RAID5 connected to the chipset sata ports and two SSDs for system and cache connected to two other ports on the mobo. Since I've connected the SSDs to the chipset ports and two of the drives to the other ports the random freezes don't happen any more. I'll keep you posted how it goes and probably buy a RAID card next time. :)
