To sum up -
1. Purchase an Atheros branded combo card from (or wherever you find it) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/150647070680 ... 2344wt_807. make sure you ask for an Atheros Branded AR5B195, part number 593127 - 001. HP bios locks non compatible and non HP approved cards. This card is for HP.

Anyone know what the limits are for wifi cards? I have HP part# 459339-001 from another dead laptop. It is the broadcom wifi card used in the DV6000. I'm thinking I might try this one, because if it works, it'd be free to me.

Yes, we tried.
First, whitelist prevents many cards from working even from other HP laptops. Once you pass that, not too many half size mini PCIe cards have OS X drivers for them.
