Radeon Compatibility Guide - ATI/AMD Graphics Cards

The next challenge is to make Intel Wireless AC 9560 CNVi work on MacOS, both wifi and Bluetooth.
Use the search tool there has been progress on a thread here for that. I believe the Bluetooth can be fixed using an ACPI patch, but there is an Intel WiFi driver thread that seems to be working for some users.

Hi everyone.
On my first HxOsh setup, I managed my way through the first boot issues, plist and all. However, it seems I am stuck inside something that looks like a compatibility issue.

I have a
x570 Tomahawk, and a
RX570 installing
osx Catalina
and when the GUI initialises, my screen doesn't get rendered properly.

edit: I am in the usb installer step - so I didn't have a running and working config before.
Also: I (seemingly needed to) create my own SSDTs b/c the precompiled ones for AMD didn't seem to work either. I suspected this to be an x570 chipset issue. Also one recommended setting (settingvirtualmap) needed to be set on FALSE otherwise it wouldn't boot- idk if that has anything to do with the issue at hand, but nonetheless.

I use the
latest opencore 0.6, the
vanilla ryzen tutorial and
lilu+whatevergreen from today (Sept-01-2020).

All resources pointed out I didn't need to edit bootflags, framebuffers or kexts, since everything should be included by default e.g. macos providing support for my video card oob.

I tried switching through all ports on my card, but the picture always looks like this (attachment)

Any hints welcome - b/c now I am all out of options / inet research was fruitful previously - but no longer.
Regards
(edit reason: added infos - also also: crp, didnt see the catalina dt support forum, google brought me here. move if needed pls, thx.)

I tried to Install Catalina with my RX 580 on my PC after using UNIBeast without any modifying in Clover configurator and I would get a black screen while loading on the apple screen on my PC. I took out the Saphire 8gb nitro+ RX 580 and put in my old 5750 XFX and it boots and runs the installer and and gets to the desktop of Catalina! I tried so much I haven't slept in a week!!!! Can some one help me out please! I tried a lot and Im about to sell this card and get another one !

Here's a general question. What AMD cards are recommended right now, if I want to upgrade to Catalina? Currently unable to upgrade due to NVIDIA. It doesn't have to be amazing for gaming; I dual boot Windows for that.

I would be running the AMD card for Mac and NVIDIA card for Windows. Hopefully that wouldn't cause problems of its own.

Why is there no mention in this list of compatible cards of Radeon HD 6450 or HD 5450 .. They do work in some MacOS versions if memory serves

5600XT at low end and 5700XT on high end. Also if you can find used RX580s those are good too.

There's new RDNA 2 cards coming next month, so it's better to wait for that. I am personally going to get the 6990XT most likely and swap my Radeon VII into the loop.

You will need to move to Big Sur though when it's officially out.

Thanks.

I'm seeing RX580s for $90 less than 5600XT. Is the RX580 considered better?

no the 5600XT is much better and more modern.

if you don’t really care about performance and just want a gpu the RX580 is still a good gpu and works in macos natively.

if you can wait a few weeks amd is going to announce the 6xxx series which will have big speed bumps and maybe the rx580 will be cheaper or the 5700xt which is a good gpu.

or you might find something in the lower end of the 6xxx series that you like. But the 6xxx support will be in Big Sur and up. So if you need a gpu now then you have good options.

So the 6xxx series would probably be the best bet for long-term compatibility and performance?

@wallace82,

Theoretically yes, there are already signs in Apples current Navi drivers that they are going to support the Big Navi 6XXX series of dGPU's. However it has typically taken Apple a long time to get new dGPU drivers stable in MacOS.

Even now some users are still experiencing glitches, lock ups and random reboots with the 5XXX Navi cards despite MacOS supporting them for a year now. These issues are not restricted to Hackintosh but effect real Mac's as well.

It is expected the 5XXX Navi support will be fully stable two or three releases into Big Sur so if your thinking of going the 6XXX Navi route keep in mind that it could take a while for Apple to get the drivers stable.

Today is the day that AMD will fully reveal Big Navi in all its glory so we will soon know how well it is going to compete against Nvidia Ampere dGPU's in price and performance.

Cheers
Jay
