im looking for a good PSU that can handle being on 24/7/52(on all the time)

here are the requirements...

  • up to 16GB of DDR3 Ram
    an i5 quad core processor
    gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard
and up to 2 SSD's and up to 2 SATA drives

all for (if possible) around 50 bucks.....if its not in any way possible let me know and i will replan my build:)

If you're simply using the integrated graphics you can get away with something in the 400-450 range. This supply gets some excellent reviews and I've used them before without issue:

If you're using integrated graphics, you won't need anything over 300w really, but may as well add some headroom.

Would be my pick, but the Antecs are very good as well.

I've used many of those in the past but recently switched for one main reason. That inexpensive antec actually has 2 +12v rails which is quite unusual for a budget supply.

If you look though, the really good, expensive power supplies always have a single +12v rail as well, such as the seasonic gold series.

Not true, the single 12V rail thing is ONLY being made because ignorant gamers demand it. Having a single 12V rail offers no advantages over multiple rails, only disadvantages, at least if it's a properly built PSU. Multiple rails are also safer in the case of a failure of the PSU where the over current and over Voltage protection doesn't work, as it wouldn't fry you when you touch your case, as would be the case of high-power single rail PSUs. 80A even at 12V is very likely to cause some serious damage to a person. That said, this shouldn't be the case with a properly built PSU, but considering that the Taiwanese and even more so the Chinese (where most, if not all PC PSUs are built) are great at "cost down" they do sometimes cut a few corners after their products have been certified. I've seen $300 PSU's go up in smoke when testing them at 100% load just because the manufacturer didn't follow the imposed standard for how certain components should be mounted on a PCB for example.
Personally I try and steer clear of high power single rail PSUs, although in this case I don't think it really matters all that much.

Yep and they are rated for high amperage and also feature a higher quality over current protection circuit not found in budget supplies. I just prefer to have the +12v rails split in a budget supply because many lack a good OCP circuit. When they have that CX430 on sale it's definitely a no brainer though:) I wish they still offered the original CX400 that was made by seasonic.

I'm a bit confused.....do I want more or less 12v rails?

I also forgot to mention one thing
I would love the psu to be modular.if this is out of the question(not in the price range)please disregard it then.

For your application, forget about the above single or dual rail discussion. I probably shouldn't have even mentioned that in this thread, sorry. Cheapest modular from a trustworthy brand is probably this:
