Herro. Noob here, but I've been stalking out this forum along with InsanelyMac for a little while now. Build is not complete, but heavily influenced by Tony's build. Mainly going to use this for general stuff, although will also be heavy on graphics and video (mainly After Effects). Would like to also dual boot with Windows and OSX. Without futher ado:

Any guidance between the two mobo's (i7-860 and 920)? I notice most people leaning toward the 860. Also, going to have to run this on a wireless network. What cards/how much trouble is that to get up and running? And I may run duals down the road if that matters.

Thanks!

For graphics, I'd go with a beefier card than the 9400- you might spend the extra for a 9800, 250 or 260 considering your video heavy apps. The 9400 would suffice, but you may regret not having the extra horsepower.

As far as the processors- you can't use a 920 (1366 socket) with the P55 boards- you'll have to go with the 860 or 870 (1156 socket), unless you pick up an X58 board. Can't recommend the UD2 enough, so if you're set on that, get the i7 860 or i7 870.

Welcome to the forum! :)

I'm starting a build too... Will probably have all the parts this weekend...

Based on recommendations here, I'm getting a 9800GT.

As I want an extremely silent/quiet build, I'm getting the following:

GPU: GIGABYTE GV-N98TSL-1GI GeForce 9800 GT 1GB Silent Cell 256-bit GDDR3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125282&Tpk=n98tsl

Heatsink: Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B SCMG-2100 Sleeve CPU Cooler

Case: Antec Sonata Designer 500W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129036&cm_re=antec_designer-_-11-129-036-_-Product
Based on reviews, I was between the Mini P180 and the Designer.
While I love the layout of the Mini P180, I opted for the Designer, as I'm worried about dust coming from the huge filter-less fan on top.
Also, you get a great PSU (EarthWatts EA-500W) included.

RAM: G.SKILL ECO 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7Q-8GBECO
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231330&cm_re=g.skill-_-20-231-330-_-Product
The reasons for this one are:
- No high heat spreaders which might interfere with the Mugen 2
- Low voltage & Low temperature

HDDs: Personally, I prefer the WD Green or the Samsung Spinpoint F3...

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I have updated my original post to reflect the changes (in red). Please let me know if anything needs work before I purchase and begin my build. THANKS!

Also, what's the status on wifi cards? I've been looking on InsanelyMac on 10.6.2 (10.6.2 Wireless at compatible cards. I don't care to use a USB stick, but I'd like it to be wireless N and of course have good range  Suggestions are welcome. <3
