So are you saying that there are still partitions after I've formatted the hard drive from the parent?

Yup.

Did you check with EFI Mounter v3.1 as suggested?

To completely remove everything, change partition scheme to MBR and format as exFAT or FAT. Then, once done, partition again as GUID and format as Mac Extended Journaled (HFS+). You can do all this with Terminal commands instead if you prefer.

No, not yet as I have only got windows installed at the moment. I'm going to try and get it sorted out next week with the help you have given.
