Probook 4540s with 16gb? How is performance?

I bought a probook 4540s i5,discrete graphics card amd 7650 and 4 gb ram and i want to upgrade. In the specs from the site i bought it it says it supports up to 8gb but on the pdf file from hp it says up to 16gb. So i did some googling , and it seems that when you upgrade to 16gb the performance is awful (windows) and the system is not responsive and slow compared to when using 4gb or 8 gb.

Is this true?

16gb on the probook 4340s works both osx and w7. had ssd and i5 cpu and was used for video editing. for w7 turn off pagefile even if you have ssd. a 16gb pagefile in w7/w8 and a 5400 rpm hdd will even make i7 cpu feel awfully slow. a 7200 rpm with 32/64mb cache or hybrid would make a bigger difference. this was for HD video editing. if you are just running benchmarks, then thats a different thing.

I don't have ssd and my hdd is 750gb 5400rpm. I don't really understand why 16gb will make the system slower than faster/or as fast as with 8 gb. So disabling the page file will fix the issues that users in the above links have? Isn't pagefile usefull, since when ram is full is stores the content of ram in pagefile and reads from the pagefile afterwards? Although 16gb is extremely difficult to fill but once is filled the apps will crash and won't be saved

Deducing 256 MB RAM from memory available to OS might eliminate the problem for some CPUs.

The solution works on:
- HP 4540s
- i5-2450M
- AMD/Intel switchable graphics
- 16 GB RAM
- Bios F.42

It might work for other CPUs.

Under Windows you should deduce 256 MB RAM, by using EasyBCD or similar tool.
Instructions for EasyBCD:
Under Advanced Settings/Developer set 256 under "MiB deducted from physical memory", save settings and restart.

Under Linux, set "mem=17G" in kernel boot parameters (effectively deduces 256 MB).

Sorry for bumping but I was thinking of getting 2x8 gb for my computer, only Mavericks, mainly used for fcp 7 and other video editing suites. Do you recommend 8gb or 16gb and then still a single 8gb vs 2x4? Anything else I should know?

Yesterday I tried 16Gb on 4540s with Sierra. Works perfectly without any explicit deducing. Seems that Clover does all the magic.

PS. I didn't measure exact performance because this sluggishness is obvious: 80 sec of Win7 boot vs 10 sec (using SSD). If somebody is interested I can take GB score from both 8Gb and 16Gb setups.

PPS. Sorry for necropost, but 4540s/4740s are still great after pumping'em up with i7, 16Gb, SSD, FullHD display.

I have installed 16GB 1600Mhz RAM in HP 4340s and it works flawlessly. You need to update the BIOS first, and reduce the "page-file" size if it becomes slow after RAM upgrade.
