Today, I would like to introduce my G5 mod. I bought the single 1.8GHz CPU Power Mac at ricardo.ch. It is in top condition, except for a little scratch at the front foot.

Original condition

On the same day I bought it, I started with the disassembling. The quality is fascinating! Every little detail is perfect on this thing...

tear down...

Re: Power Mac G5 Intel Reloaded Edition

The arrangement meets the ATX standard. That means, the power supply is mounted on top of the case, so that the warm air is blowed out.

The first work was to cut out the back. I have used the ATX panel of an old digitalis HTPC case. It has the perfect size to seal unused openings. The opening for the power socket was shifted to the top.

Of course, I had to fabricate new MOBO standoffs. I made their diameter very large in order to obtain a large adhesive surface.

Those standoffs are beautiful. If you had them for sale, I so would have bought a set. I ended up buying these standoff type looking rivets from mcmaster which happen to be of a perfect height with the brass standoff screwed on to it.

According to the board rules, it is not allowed to sell something here, sorry. I can give you the drawing of the standoffs. Take it and ask in a local machinery shop, if they can fabricate them for you.

2 thumbs up! Very, very good build quality

In the next step, I had to cut a hole for the powersupply fan into the top shelf.

Another work was to assemble an adapter cable from "system apple" to "system every other manufacturer" (aka ATX) for the front panel. Its LED, power switch and USB port are working - I don't use the headphone and Firewire connectors.

Why are you not going with cable management? It could save you a lot of time hiding the cables.

You may be right, but technology that looks decent, must be visible. ;)

The next step was to glue the MOBO standoffs into the case - i've used "Araldit" 2 component glue. For this purpose, I used an old motherboard and graphics card to fix the new standoffs in position.

To fix the two 120mm front-fans and the 3 hexagon-bolts for the hdd cage, I made a massive frame and fixed it with 4 screws to the 4 original power supply-holes in the bottom.

Re: Power Mac G5 Intel Reloaded Edition

Looking good so far, Like how tight you have the rear panel keeping as much as the original case as possible.
Front set up is nice as well with the rail system and HDD tray.
