[Update: Bolded items have been purchased at the listed price (including shipping + any rebates).]
[Update: Yet another reversal. The plan is now to go back to Skylake. After doing some more research on Kaby Lake vs. Skylake, it seems like it makes sense to stick with Skylake for a few reasons. First, it's native. Second, it retains Microsoft's native support of Windows 7 through 2020. Third, Kaby Lake is not a performance increase for anything I'd use my computer for. I do plan to slot the Skylake CPU in a Z270 MOBO, however.]
The goal is a future-proof gaming rig of fairly high power. A dual-boot option is planned, with one SSD running Windows and one SSD running OS X. So this is definitely intended to be a Hackintosh. I don't need maximum FPS in current super-high-end games, but I do aim to run older games (e.g., WoW or DDO) at decent FPS. We're maxxing it out, baby (within sane limits)!
Case ($71): Phanteks Enthoo Pro Series PH-ES614P_TG Titanium Green Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Power Supply ($115): EVGA Supernova 850 W Gold G3 Series PC Power Supply Unit
-Planned for future-proofing. (Will probably eventually run in SLI.)
Motherboard ($139): ASUS TUF Z270 Mark 2 LGA1151 DDR4 HDMI DVI M.2 USB 3.1 Z270 ATX Motherboard
-This will be swapped for an ASUS TUF Z270 MARK 1. The Mark 2 is *not* ATX. Also, the Mark 2 I received has bad DIMMS.
Graphics Card ($419): GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 DirectX 12 GV-N1070G1 GAMING-8GD 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 SLI Support ATX Video Card
-This is the compromise between power and price I have settled upon.
Processor ($326): Intel Core i7 6700K 4.00 GHz Unlocked Quad Core Skylake Desktop Processor, Socket LGA 1151 [BX80662I76700K]
RAM ($206): CORSAIR Vengeance RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3466 (PC4 27700) C16 Intel 100/200 Series PC Memory CMR16GX4M2C3466C16
-A couple more dollars for pretty lights? Yes please.
SSD Storage:
($128): Samsung 960 EVO Series - 250GB PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD (MZ-V6E250BW)
-Windows will be installed here.
($108): Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-75E250B/AM
-OS X will be installed here.
Spinning Disk Storage ($130): VelociRaptor WD1000CHTZ 1 TB 2.5" Internal Hard Drive
-For use with OS X only.
Wi-Fi ($49.69): Fenvi FV-T919 802.11AC A/B/G/N/AC BT 4.0
Optical Drive ($50): LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter without Software, Black Model WH14NS40 - OEM
Cooler ($80): Noctua D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 PWM Fans, Retail Cooling NH-D15S
Current Total: $1700-ish
Have I missed something? Overlooked a better option? Does this achieve my goals? Am I Hackintosh compatible? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
