Playstation One Case Mod [Work Log in Progress]

I haven't posted anything mod like in a bit, I had lost my work space in doing my mods so this has put a major damper on my projects. I do however have some room for this little set up I am starting up.

So there you have it, all of the parts that I will attempt to stuff inside this:




Here is the mobo and cooler set next to the Playstation case, I will have to have the motherboard I/O come out the side to achieve any kind of fit.


So you see it will be a very tight fit, I have the i3 stock cooler on it right now as I am going to run some tests with the board this evening and get OS X working on it. I basically spent last night getting HDMI auto going on the Sabertooth/GT 610 and half taring this Playstation apart and didn't run anything on the GA-H77TN. I did fire it up on the Dell brick and that worked fine.


Here is some basic tare down of the PLaystation Case.


My biggest challenge will be that Sony DVD drive converted to fit into the PS case and current optical holder. I might go on the hunt for a flip top DVD drive (Sata) to make things a bit easier but until I dive into this drive a bit more I wont make that decision.



It will be tight and it will be thin, but I think this will all work without hacking the crap out of the case. One thing I will do is clean out that whole bottom piece and make a mobo tray and measure out the side for the I/O and then see about air intake and exhaust.

I will also run that board through the ringer and see how well it like OS X and what not.

I also hope to keep on top of this project and not let it get shuffled to the sidelines lol.

nice one i would try a (server) cooler on that,they are small and low profile,that is going to be a tight fit at best
do they make a top loading sata drive?
maybe contact sony for a sata decoder pcb for that drive?

i use this for my mini music server
just enough juice for mobo hd and lcd

That cooler is just about server size, except there isnt really a gap between the board and the fins.

The DVD will be fun to mess with, I did find a top load Bluray player but I wasnt ready to dish out $90. for an item I am going to tear apart and pray it works lol.

The motherbaord has a power Sata plug plus a Sata power cable so the one plug Dell PSU works great and that power Sata port runs the SSD and DVD drive just fine.

Only issue I had with the Unibeast installer is I cannot use the rear USB ports as they are 3.0, was getting that error while trying to load it.
So thankfully the USB board header is 2.0 and I have a 9 pin to USB converter. After that I can get past that issue.

Hi Eelhead, had you considering mounting the cooler to the side (rather than front) of the motherboard, that way the IO ports could exit at the back of the case? The following picture of a Xbox mod shows the arrangement.

Yeah either the side or the rear, once I get messing with it inside the bottom try I will then know how I am going to set it up. Keep in mind the top case section and the CD cover, some of these pieces hang low into the case and until I grind out the bottom tray flush I wont know in what direction it will miss anything on the mobo and cooler. I also am going to put that DVD set up and SSD inside as well and where ever the best position for everything is how it will be best set up.

We will see how it goes.

So I got Mountain Lion going on this thin board. All seems to be running well with it, I can put it to sleep and wake it with no issues. I did not leave it alone and let it sleep by its self yet though, was to busy messing with it.

I went with Macbook Pro settings for the HD4000 and see how it all rolls



And here you see my Unibeast install drive plugged into the boards USB_1 header pin with an adapter.




Install was a PITA as I have really only messed with X58 boards so I forgot about the UEFI bios and if you don't check off that one needed item in Multibeast then your not going to boot into your drive and will end up with the appleintelcpupowermanagement kernal panic.

So install Multibeast was easy, did non DSDT with 887 audio, Realtek ethernet and the appleintelcpupowermanagement option for booting do it won't KP.

Now to figure out the fittings into the case lol.

Could you tell me your exact bios settings? The H77TN bios is unlike the other 7 series boards. I am having no luck booting from the HD. I can boot with Unibeast and select the HD and all is good, but sleep.

All I did with bios was make sure the Sata ports were set at AHCI, other than that I didn't do anything bios wise.

I had to use a USB header to plug the Unibeast into as the pics show and then when I run MB that appleintelcpupowermanagement option.
