I'm not sure I understand what you are saying... Do you mean that you want to install a USB2 header to USB port adapter internally, then connect a USB Bluetooth receiver to it?

I used the Asus AI Suite to overclock my i7-6700K and it brought me to 4.8GHz. I used it at that speed for almost a year before upgrading to an i7-7700K.

Just because it can run Prime95, it doesn't mean that it will b stable for everything. When you experience instability, the first thing I would try is to increase voltage. However, when you increase voltage, heat comes with it. Therefore, you will have to monitor heat when testing stability.

Yeah sorry I meant to use the USB 2 header on the mobo and put the BT (tiny little thing) inside the case and not outside.

For the Overclock, what voltage were you using for the 6700k? I'm not OC expert, would love to know. It seems stability under Windows doesn't translate well to stability under macOS. I have a H80i AIO cooler so it definitely keeps the CPU a bit chilly even when it hits 85w-90w. I guess I need to experiment a bit more.

I was so close to getting the 7700k but didn't see it as much of an upgrade. Skylake-X for me would be a huge upgrade from a 6700k.

If you put the USB Bluetooth adapter inside your case, it's very likely that the case itself is blocking the signal. Do you see it when you go to System Information/USB?

You mentioned that you are at 1.285v. Since you said temps are good, I think you can try up to about 1.320-1.350 without worrying.

Thank you! Will try.

Regarding the USB, yeah the signal is lost when it's in the case. I was looking for a USB BT receiver with large antennas but couldn't find any. I haven't seen it show up in SysInfo.

By the way do you have any ideas as to why my system freezes once in a while? I went back to an older BIOS and it still freezes, especially when using Adobe apps like After Effects and Premiere when doing heavy loads. CPU is not Overclocked.

The latest BIOS caused way more crashes than older.

When you are in System Information, you should see your Bluetooth receiver.

I have no idea why you are experiencing freezes. Have you applied all important fixes as per post #1, (particularly power management)? Are CPU temps within reasonable range when it freezes? When it freezes, does the screen just sit there unresponsive or is the system restarting? Is the RAM overclocked? Are you using XMP profile? Have you run a RAM test? Is your graphics card overheating? Have you looked at crash logs?

Will check on the USB BT!

Have you applied all important fixes as per post #1, (particularly power management)?

Yeah, I have a SSDT from the 6700k.

Are CPU temps within reasonable range when it freezes?

Yeah CPU is not overclocked right now so it freezes (and restarts) during cpu usage thats about 50-60% (so not on complete full load). It hovers around 64-65c during that time.

When it freezes, does the screen just sit there unresponsive or is the system restarting?

It just does a soft reboot so I have to boot into macOS again. The mouse freezes right before it restarts. This never used to happen on this system, so I thought going back to older BIOS versions would fix the issue. I think its a hardware issue (Thought it was USB related).

Is the RAM overclocked?

Not anymore. It's the Crucial Sports Ballistix RAM which is native DDR4 2400 and they don't recommend OC'ing.

Are you using XMP profile?

Yeah I am. But I turned it off to see if that was the issue.

Have you run a RAM test?

Just ran REMBER for about 12 hours and no issues from the logs that I see.

Is your graphics card overheating?

I have 2 GPUs, but they're not heavily being used. BUT you may be on to something, I will take one of them out to see if that fixes the issue and swap them if I Get a freeze.

Have you looked at crash logs?
I could never find the correct logs in Console. Anywhere specific to look?

It may be finder/adobe related. Any thoughts?

Just want to pinpoint to, if it's hardware, want to be able to know which one and fix it :(

I wonder if it's CUDA or nVidia driver related?
I've been holding back on upgrading to High Sierra....maybe I should.

EDIT: For the USB BT you were right, it's definitely the case blocking the antenna so I will keep it outside for now. I have a BT headphone I use and can't walk around with the receiver in the case.

Yes, it appears that it might be an issue associated with the combination of Adobe apps and Nvidia drivers.

Interesting. Do you think if I upgrade to High Sierra it will be fixed? Or should I install from scratch?

This never used to happen before and I haven't done any "major" updates to this machine. I've had it since 2015 with this same board that you have.

EDIT: Updated to 10.13.2 after a bit of trouble. Had to remove GPUs and install via iGPU. Update installer went fine from the App Store. Now put back the GPUs and it's working OK. However 2nd DP port on the 1st GPU doesn't work when you have it connected to a second monitor after a restart. So I plugged in 2nd monitor to 2nd GPU DP port. Really weird.

Will report back if this crash was fixed.
