Yes, the only real disadvantage to 3401 is lack of native NVRAM. If you are using a Kaby Lake CPU, you really have no choice but use 3401. Skylake CPU users can stay at 2202.
EmuVariableUEFI-64 and RC scripts work fine as a substitute for native NVRAM and many people use it.
The one feature of native NVRAM that I feel is great is the ability to see a panic report when the system reboots after a crash. This can make troubleshooting much easier.
