pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

Since I have never owned a machine with Windows on it, tried using a Mac to turn a USB stick into a bootable Windows 10 installer. Been using command lines and special apps for this but in the end I could not get the Gigabyte Gaming 5 board to 'see' it. Since I'm doing this for the first time and the motherboard does not always react how I expect it to on drives, nor does the manual provide much info on this matter, it's hard for me to know whether I'm doing something wrong with the hardware, BIOS or USB boot drive.

Finally, after hours, gave up on the Mac route and managed to create a bootable USB installer for W10 by using Parallels on a MacBook Pro.

Windows 10 seems to work OK. Even though I have worked on Windows desktops and laptops for clients, it feels quite strange to have a Windows machine of my own.

I haven't used it for long enough to determine if the Vega 56 black screen glitch is on it or not. So far not, although at startup you usually first see a windows logo on a black background for a second or less, then a black screen for a moment, then a larger Windows logo/startup thing and almost immediately the Windows desktop. If feels like this is not a completely smooth sequence, but what do I know? Maybe this is perfectly normal. Can anyone confirm this?

I think that it is normal since this is what Windows 10 did on my Windows machine before I formatted it and put Windows 7 on it. The first boot screen is Windows 10 booting the BIOS, then it loads the video drivers and actually loads the boot screen. I think turning on the Windows 10/8 WHLQ setting in the BIOS will fix it. I am pretty conferrable with either OS as I started with DOS, Windows 3.1/3.11, Windows 95/98/2000/XP/7. Then, I went Mac when late 2013 Mac Pro came out.

It's nice to read that I'm not the only one who struggles with Windows a bit here and there. I must not complain about a self-chosen Windows exploration of course and yes, I'm only doing it for the games, some curiosity as to how Windows is doing theses days and because once or twice a year I run into some sort of archaic tool app that is only available for Windows an that I need in order to 'program' a device that can send SMS-texts when it detects water or something like that, for my work.

About weird monitor behavior
So far, I used the Display Port connector between my new hackintosh and the screen, assuming this was the best option since it has the most potential. However, tonight I got the luminous idea to use a HDMI cable instead. It probably won't make any difference in terms of video quality since the monitor is 60 Hz max and has no option for FreeSync but this Dell 3008WFP is from 2008 and it sooner displays an image when the signal is given via HDMI, it appears. I suppose the 'hardware handshake' is simpler.

The difference is that now, I see the AORUS logo and [F-this and that options] for a fraction of a second!

2) I still could not get into BIOS mode 99 of a 100 times. I found conversation about this online where someone suggested it would be because of the wrong USB connector (too high USB number). I tried them all, but that didn't change anything.

Then someone said not to hold down the Delete key during POST, but to keep tapping it. I thought this would definitely not make any difference but guess what… When tapping the delete key at POST, I get into the BIOS! I can't believe this is normal. Specially not since the tapping 'detail' is not mentioned in the manual. Please tell me if this is normal or not.

3)
Anyway, this is what it looks like when I boot in to Windows (sorry for crappy video quality):
https://vimeo.com/user49225627/review/312276351/3652937c77

I get a "Sorry, we couldn’t find that page" on that link.

I suppose you are right about W10 but online I found a discussion stating that "The "Windows 8 WHQL" Setting is only for Systemintegrators to run a full Microsoft WHQL test.
Please don´t use this for normal operation."

Also, someone that used it complained he couldn't get into BIOS again, so I think I'll skip that one ;)

Maybe that is true I really do not know I am pretty sure that it is enabled but I guess, when running Windows 7, it would not make a difference as Windows 7 does not have control over the BIOS or what it displays at boot. Windows 8/8.1 and windows 10 are allowed to take over the BIOS boot screen and display a Windows boot screen rather than show the board manufactures splash screen.

Then someone said not to hold down the Delete key during POST, but to keep tapping it.

Tapping Delete or what ever key is required to get into the bios has always been my preferred method. Holding it down can cause the system to believe the key is stuck and shut the key off.

Much appreciated video!

How do you get to that ‘select boot device’ screen?

Ah… F12

It’s not even mentioned in the manual but it is visible in a picture of the screen

I’m still very curious though if both you guys @pastrychef and @scottkendall can get in the BIOS / Boot Selection without tapping.

@pastrychef, do you usually tap to begin with?

Hello, @pastrychef. Thanks 4 your excellent guide!
My iMac 18,3 has been running decently since yesterday, two issues/questions remain:

1. I have not yet done the "USB fix", as i have not yet had any major issues except i noticed after my computer is scheduled to go to sleep, it shuts down.

is that due to the not perfectly fixed USB ports? Or some other issue?

2. 9th Gen CPU IGPU fix – haven't done that either, but i have installed the NoVPAJpeg.kext – which allowed me to use preview again. So my question would be: Does the 9th Gen fix adress the preview issue? seems like a smoother way to go about it.

Thanks a bunch!

I'm also curious what the USB fix fixes? I have not installed it (yet) since I didn't run into anything USB-y not working, so far. Didn't do much with USB though, obviously.

Hello, I'm on the latest version of Mojave (10.14.2) and am experiencing a little issue with Preview. When opening most jpeg or png files, Preview becomes unresponsive and doesn't open the file. I looked this issue up and found the following guide to fix it: [HOW TO] Fix QuickLook and Preview loading issues in Mojave. This guide lists multiple solutions: can you advise me as to which one is the best one with this motherboard? Thanks
