What is on the USB drive? What update are you trying to install and how are you installing it? (step by step of what you did would be nice)

If it is not a Mac OS X version compatible with the update you are trying to install then of course it will not install on the USB.

I had this error once because I formatted with the wrong settings. Check the options button under the partition layout graphic.

Sorry I haven't replied to the responses offered, but sometimes Life and Work interrupt our fun.

Anyway, GB, your first question got me to checking the Memory Device more closely. While there was nothing on it, it was formatted for Windows. After I did a Mac reformat, I was able to continue.

However, when running UniBeast, the installation failed. Searching didn't reveal anything that seemed like what happened. Anyway, the log entries are:
