A non-detailed Guide

Installing OS X (SL and Lion) in a PC only environment:

The key to success here is having an OS X compatible Intel system with a video card that was supported in Snow Leopard. The NVIDIA 8400, 9400, and 9600 cards usually install without issue. The Gt 210, 220, 240, series may cause problems during installation. And all of the new tech is to be avoided if you are not an knowledgeable OS X hacker.

In this context PC = MS Windows of some flavor.

Perquisite: You must purchase and have in hand an Apple OS X 10.6.3 DVD

On your PC goto the TonyMacX86 Downloads and download the current iBoot file.

Goto your Download folder on the PC and extract the iBoot.iso file from the zip file.

Google and download shareware image burning application ImgBurn (and install it).

Using ImgBurn, burn the iBoot CD.

You now have a boot CD and Apple OS X 10.6.3 = the key to entry into the world of OS X. You can now boot into the Snow Leopard installer. But you need to go do your home work as you run the risk of killing your Windows installation.

Go read and read more here on this forum. Search for postings from users that own the same hardware as your system.

As an aside, I do not see a way to install Lion (at this time) with out first installing Snow Leopard just so that you can purchase Lion on line. There may be a way using the Apple OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive but there is no hint yet as to how this would be accomplished in a PC only environment.

Can I clarify a bit:

You can install OS X Lion with either the downloaded OS X Lion app from the App Store or the OS X Lion Thumb Drive from Apple thanks to UniBeast.

But yes, it must be done from an system running OS X, not Windows.

Well that is the point;

If you are on Windows or LINUX and do not have access to an OS X system, you can get there to today by using the iBoot and Apple Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD route.

The iBoot CD can be generated on non-OS X systems. It is like yeast; with it you can start the process.
