Coming in late on this topic early 2018 I found this article took out some complexity on Sierra 10.12.6: https://nickwoodhams.com/getting-your-nvme-ssd-working-on-macos-sierra-10-12-2/
Following it enabled a Samsung 960 EVO M.2 500GB on GIGABYTE GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 microATX.

Problem with that article is that it doesn't follow current guidelines for using patch_nvme.sh.
And a later system update will cause the system to crash (KP after update) due to the fact that without the class-code spoof technique, native IONVMeFamily.kext cannot co-exist with HackrNVMeFamily*.kext.
The correct procedures are detailed in the class-code/HackrNVMeFamily guide as @Stork mentions above.
