I would like to thank everyone's creativity and outstanding knowledge on the subject of these cases and various other bits of electronic wizardry for inspiring me to build not only a hacktintosh as I had originally intended but do it right and put it in a Mac Pro case.

That said, this thread is not intended to be a showoff thread nearly as much as a distress beacon for myself and another thread for some poor schmo like myself to read to encourage and educate.

OK on to the goods:
The build: I will be using the 2600k Customac build however with the matx gigabyte board featured in mooners build for space reasons. I will also be consolidating the small homesever I have with its 3, 2TB drives and solid state for the 4 drive bays as well as a Corsair H80 for cooling.

Day 0: Mac Pro 2008 (sata cable front panel) case came in from ebay. Outstanding, brand new complete and in the plastic without a scratch. Very pleased. I also recieved my SAS to Sata adapter and my apple bluetooth unit.

Day 1:
2nd Batch of parts arrived. Not Pictured 3 2TB Hd's I already own and a Corsair H70 cooler. I will be building the computer into a temp case to get ready while I wait for other parts to come such as soldering iron cable wrap, shrink tubing and etc and inch worm my way through the splicing and preparing of the cables cuz I am a scared little child, who I am sure will be asking a lot of questions.

Day 3 or 4 now.

I forgot to take pictures of me snapping off the stand offs and epoxying in the replacement ones but thats been covered before. So on to the installation of the h60.

Latest Update:
With a little more help from mooner I was able to wire the power cables of the SAS array into 2 standard molex connectors.

I used some molex connectors with 3pin fan connectors also on them because where the cables naturally end up is right next to the plastic fan holder which I put 2 120mm Scythe fans in:

The sas to sata adapter is from here: http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index ... uct_id=176 Keep in mind it only handles data so you are going to need to do some molex splicing or whatever to complete the project.

My build is the #4 2600k customac build listed here on tonymacx86 with the exception that I am using the matx gigabyte z68 motherboard instead of the fullsize for easier placement inside of the mac pro case. oh and a 700watt power supply as I am going to have 4 hard drives in the case.

aside from that, What kind screw bits do I need torx 8 and just a screwdriver right?

I'm drooling, its gorgeous!

Looks like you're off to a great start... That SAS to SATA adapter is great, no?? I wish the cables were shorter...

If you have a 2.5" SSD, it won't mate with the Apple hot-swap connectors... The SATA connectors on a 2.5" drive simply won't line up right -- even with a 2.5 to 3.5 drive bay adapter... If you skip the Apple hot-swap connectors, you can use a normal SATA cable...

Really? I remember seeing in your thread that one guy had bought an icydock adapter and it fit

Ya, I suppose an adapter with a circuit board might fit... Something like the icy dock might work... It would have to have the SATA connectors on the outside for the 3.5" connector location, then offset connectors on the inside for the 2.5" location.

But the bent sheet metal mounting kit that came with my OCZ SSD doesn't even come close... In fact, the SATA connector on the 2.5" drive was so far over to one side that I couldn't even get it to temporarily fit in the drive bay without any mounting hardware...

Hey I'm that guy. The Icy-Dock 2.5" to 3.5" adapter is a good and inexpensive solution for using the SSDs in one or more of the Mac Pro slides. I have my sample here at my desk and really can hardly believe that you can have this much tech for about $15 shipped. And I have no association with the supplier or manufacturer.

neil.
