Just came across an interesting tidbit on new M1 Pro/Max from GregsGadgets review:
  • 2TB and higher models deliver 7+ GB/sec read write speed
  • 512GB and 1TB models deliver 5.x GB/sec read write speed
    • 5.x GB/s is plenty fast...

The graph shows the light blue bars as the write speed. As most Youtubers say "simply insane speeds."

Oh yes, quite right. Seems I automatically equate the faster speed to read rather than write.

Looks like your new M1 Max MBP should be good for many years of use with these kinds of speeds.

In the back of my mind I had a feeling there would be 'skeletons in the closet' of the lesser configurations. Seems we're uncovering some of those skeletons now. Nevertheless, both of those speeds are excellent and no one who selected the 512GB or 1TB option should be worried.

If being capped at 4.5 and 5.5 GB/s read/write speeds is a "skeleton", all I can say is: Happy Halloween!

I am curious if the new M1 Pro/Max will bring back the questions about the ssd wearing as it is soldered. Is there anybody using M1 with such problems ?

M1Max disk test 14" - pretty darn great, from my point of view......it does vary after a number of tests (this one was about 10 passes in).

EDIT: I've gone through a number of laptops the past year, kind of desparate to replace my aging early 2013 Macbook Pro (it needs some help!), including a few from Dell, and others, and I have to say that, by a large margin, this is best. No question!

My tests show the GPU matches and some times outshines the Vega 64X 16GB from an iMac Pro (I know, I have one)

One more detail about M1 support by Adobe:

I attended Adobe's Max event, and one of the sessions was direct from the After Effects development team.

After Effects M1 support is available in the Beta only as of now. It cannot be had in the released version yet. I make a direct query to the AE team and about this and got a direct answer (on Thursday, this week).

So for AE users (like me) it is coming soon, but not yet (Beta is really good, anyway).

FYI...

DDR5 Memory is hard to find and expensive at this time. Reviewers are recommending waiting until some time in 2022 for updated versions (i.e. skip first gen DDDR5 modules for Alder Lake).

On NewEgg, a pair of 16GB DDR5 5200 MT/s modules are US$370. Memory modules in 14" and 16" MacBook Pros are presumed to be DDR5 6400 MT/s.
