As I can't afford to go buying randomly, this helps.
My own CustomMac has a GT440/GT630 and it seems as quick, if not more so, that my older, genuine iMac 21.5.
As Apple has now gone with the Kepler 6** series just about exclusively, it makes sense to go down the nVidia route although general wisdom is that the Radeon 7750/7770/7790 series is actually more powerful.
Incidentally I tried to do a similar comparison for sound chips, to see which were used by genuine Macs so I could source an add-on card to replace the Realtek. For example my Mac Mini uses a Cirrus Logic chip but finding a third-party sound card using the same ... doesn't happen
