NVIDIA Graphics Card Price Cuts - GeForce GTX 780 Ti Released

NVIDIA's latest high end graphics card has been released: the GeForce GTX 780 Ti. It's a screaming fast card at the high end coming in with more CUDA cores than the TITAN. The GK110 based card's specs include 2880 stream processors, 384-bit, and 3GB of RAM. They're billing it as the "fastest gaming card on the planet."

Due to this reveal, and in no small way to AMD's new cheaper graphics cards, NVIDIA has dropped prices across the board on almost all Kepler GPUs. The GTX 780 price has been cut by $150!

I was clicking through the NVIDIA cards on the buyers list, and it seems that quite a few are discontinued or out of stock from the 660 - 680 models. Is this an indication that the graphics card selection is going to be updated soon?

Well the reason for that is because the 760-780 are the replacements for the 660-680. I'd say the 7xx cards are the best bet at this point, although you can get some good deals on the older 6xx lineup as well.

I and another currently have this EVGA GTX 780 and in either ML or Mavericks, anytime OpenCL is referenced, it's an immediate crash with the exact same crashed thread info. I'm wondering if these cards (including the Ti referenced in tonymac's OP) are too new and will have issues in the short term.

Interesting- I've personally tested the 760/770 with none of those issues. I wonder if it could be due to the 3GB. You may need a patch to enable OpenCL support. Check out this post on 4GB 680:

Thank you tonymac, I'll give that a try. I have both an ML and MV partition I can boot from, so at least if one fails, the other is bootable. I'll let you know if it works.

Edit: Looks likt it doesn't work. Mavericks DP (the ones we weren't allowed to talk about here) appear to have had working GK110 OpenCL code, but the release drivers are apparently a full regression and are older than the stock 10.8.5 drivers.

Apple really screwed up the drivers in Mavericks release.

I also share your concerns, but I'm curious as to which apps you've encountered these crashes with. The only experience I have with OpenCL on Mavericks with a GTX 780 is LuxMark v2.1 and I've not had any crashes.

Which GTX 780 do you have, specifically. I listed mine, which was only very very recently released. The exact model you are using may be very relevant here.

As for the apps, LuxMark crashes on initialization of the OpenCL portion of its engine. Preview crashes when attempting to open any graphics format (basically anything other than PDF or text/RTF). Quicklook crashes instantly when attempting to view any graphics format files. Pacifist crashes on launch (3.x - 2.6.4 still works in ML and Mavericks and does not use OpenCL and thus does not crash). Cornerstone SVN client crashes on launch.

Basically anything that even so much as blinks at OpenCL crashes. Safe Boot, which leaves some of the nVidia drivers enabled but disables the GeForce drivers does not crash, but also provides for a stutterific unaccelerated UI and no games that require OpenGL launch properly due to lack of an OpenGL platform available.

The IGP by itself does not cause the crash, but is obviously far slower than the GTX 780 in any form. The crashes also remain with the IGP disabled and only the GTX 780 online, regardless of whether or not I have IGP Enabler = No/Yes or the IGP disabled/enabled in the BIOS.

MysticalOS, who has the same card as I do notes that the crashes disappear for a single boot when he changes the PEG (PCIe) speeds between 2.0 and 3.0, indicating either a severe power management problem in the drivers or in the PLX on his board (I do not show his results when changint the PEG revision speed, possibly because my board does not have a PLX on it - his is the Gigabyte OC Force and mine is the same as yours, the UD5H).

That's why I asked which exact version of the 780 you have. It may well be that OS X does not like the rather large factory OC built into my card, but tolerates yours (if it is an OC'd version) just fine.

I have the EVGA 03G-P4-2781-KR, so I guess that's why LuxMark works for me (and I imagine other OpenCL apps will too). I don't know if I'll be making another Hackintosh anytime soon, but I'd rather know what to look out for than buy something that'll cause frustrations.

But knowing that Mavericks has an older Nvidia driver than ML 10.8.5 is still a concern for me.
