Nvidia 980 Ti freshly installed, working but does not recognise GPU

I have a feeling it is because you are running an OS that came out 7 months before the GPU did and the driver does not have the device ID for your card.

So just out of curiosity if that's the issue would upgrading beyond 10.10.1 which the OP stated he was on be the answer to this issue and then simply upgrade the Nvidia web drivers to the correct version to match the new OS build which would presumably be the last dot update of 10.10?

That's my thought. There is no reason to stick with 10.10.1, there have been lots of security patches for Yosemite which he is missing out on.
