NOOB ALERT NOOB ALERT

First of all. Thanks for a great site with this huge knowledge database. I'm hooked and can't leave. I spent 2 days reading about how this works and many tips on how to build a perfect Hackintosh. My wife already starting hating this new project.

I worked with with mac for several years now so I know a litlle about how OSX works. First a G4 and now a G5. I'm producing music with Logic Audio Pro 9 but since A*P*P*L*E stopped the support for this old PPC chip its time to take the next step.

After a big research I found that this system should be a good starting point:
CPU:Intel Core i7 860 / 2.8 GHz Processor
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (rev. 1.0)
Graphic: Gigabyte GV N98TSL-1GI
RAM: 4 x 2gb OCZ Gold Quad Kit
CPU fan: Scythe Mugen 2 rev.B SCMG-2100
DVD-drive: Pioneer DVR S18LBK
PSU: Corsair Professional Series HX650W
HD: WD Caviar Green WD10EARS

Although I know OSX this is a little confusing. I need to know some basic things before starting.
Normally Mac computers have an TMP chip on the motherboard and a EFI indstead of a BIOS. To have OSX run an ordinary PC we have to fake an TMP chip and the EFI system.

1. Is it why we use iBoot?
2. What does it mean when people take about patching the kernel?
3. Why should we use these kext files?

More questions is coming if I know myself.

Best regards
Søren - Denmark

1. Yes and no. If I'm not mistaken, Chameleon does the job of telling OS X it is running on an EFI system.

2. For some CPUs Apple don't use themselves there is a need to patch the kernel. Not for yours though, since it's used in the i7 iMac.

3. kext-files are the equivalents to drivers in Windoze. The more compatible your build is with OS X, the less additional kexts you'll need because OS X already brings a lot of kexts with it, which you need on your board, too.
In the case of your board, for example, you'll have to have MultiBeast install the LegacyALC888 kext (audio) and the RealtekR1000SL kext (network) and that's it; ah, and fakesmc, but everybody has to install that one.

Hi Pandar,

I am looking to built a machine for Logic myself.
Untill i saw your post, i was gonna go for GA-P55-UD4,
But if Logic works better on a GA-X58A-UD3R REV 1.0, i might just go for that.

So the question is which MB is the better choice for Logic 9.1.1

one more q, do you run Logic in 64 bit?

Undsdkyld afbrydelsen Søren.

Hi flatfoot and Pandar.

Thanks for some comprehensive answers. Pandar, I would like to talk a lot more about this little project. I PM you.

@nickKBH
Its totally okay. Maybe we should get together and build an awesome PC for Logic use. Maybe others could use that info too.
Måske nogle på lydmaskinen ville have glæde at at prøve noget nyt :shh: ;)

@Pandar
If I use an other MOBO like the one you suggested that's not are on this list http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/12/dsdt-database-for-p55-motherboards.html.
Does it mean that its gonna be more diffecult? I haven't totally figured out what DSDT is good for.

Cheers
Søren

Pandar, well that sounds promising.
Been waiting for superior myself....
But omnisphere is constantly giving me problems in 32 bit.

It would be great if you could explain the procedure on installing OSX on a GA-X58A-UD3R REV 1.0

The recipes here on this site seem pretty easy to deal with.....
So it would be great to know the differences in procedures.

Søren, sure. lets buy the same parts and we can guide eachother, and others as well.
I would be nice to have a partner in crime.
Og måske kan vi overbevise de andre forstokkede lydmaskinister om der findes alternativer.....hvis det altså virker.

Thanks

Nicolai

Hey Pandar,
Thanks a lot for your help.

Btw, i use a 2882 myself, so it's good to know it works.

My plan is to have a wifi card.
like this one.
http://x86wifi.blogspot.com/

It seem Søren and i will try to build the same machine, so we can support each other.

Does your build support 2 graphics cards.

Next i guess is to go get some parts.....

What kind of RAM and graphics card do you recommend.

Thanks Pandar.

So here are the building blocks.

Assemble
Boot with Iboot
Install OSX 10.6.3
Install pandars DSDT
Update to 10.6.4 propably 10.6.5, very soon.......

Make music......

What do you say Søren.
I think this is pretty close.

Hmmmm, i will be using wifi, but ethernet could come in handy at some point.....
But i would like to use HDMI, is that possible with a X58 ud5?
What do you mean matched set of 3 sticks?

Also wondering why a X58 ud5 is $100 more expensive......
