How do you feel about a Z170 motherboard with a 7700K processor?

The i7 7700K is mostly working now. But until Apple releases a computer that uses a Kaby Lake CPU, sleep won't be working.

open to any suggestions.

The Samsung SM951 AHCI versions are difficult to find now... But if you can find them, they work well. The Kingston HyperX Predator is easier to find but isn't as fast as the SM951.

Seeing as how you are looking at a case that features passive cooling, I would say that the Nvidia GTX 970 or GTX 980 are probably the highest GPUs you want to go to. The GTX 980 Ti performs better but also generates much more heat.

Thank you for the quick response. Would you say a 7700K on a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 is a good idea or should I go with the Z270X version?

I assume a kaby lake imac should come out some time this year, so as you said that should fix the sleep problem.

Do you think the 7700K is a better choice than the 6700K? Have you heard anything about 6700K being buggy? Or about 7700K getting overheated?

If I went with the 6700 would the sleep function work? pretty important to me as I leave my pc running throughout the day.

I believe it does, the only thing that keeps me from getting it is that I have heard that 6700K (skylake processors) were a bit buggy and that's why intel released new Kaby lake earlier than expected. But I don't know if this is a fact or just a bad rumor.

If you will be going with an i7 7700K, you may as well use it with a Z270 motherboard.

No one knows what Apple will do other than Apple themselves... Many people have been expecting Mac Pro updates for years...

The 7700K is a bit faster than the 6700K, but not by a lot. It is very much an evolutionary upgrade rather than revolutionary. If there are any bugs with the 6700K, I am unaware of them. I have not really looked in to the 7700K's heat output, but seeing as how similar they are to the Skylakes, I doubt they would be very different.

Sleep/wake works fine on a properly configured hackintosh. Both my desktop (6700K) and my laptop sleep/wake perfectly.

The power supply you have listed seems a bit under powered. Search google for computer power supply calculators to see how much wattage you will need. Personally, I would go slightly above what's recommended to have a little headroom.

Be sure to check the dimensions of whichever video card you choose to ensure that it will fit in the Stream DB4 case.

Check the ASRock site to see if they have a list of approved RAM for that motherboard.

On Newegg's site, they have the Kingston HyperX Predator 960GB for $490.
