No progress at all. Intel launch 11 Gen CPUs - very performance, AMD release new graphic card RX 6700/6900. Apple stay with M1 chip (

You're probably going to have to wait until the larger iMac gets released to see a new Apple Silicon CPU. Maybe WWDC?

Also, I still feel like the Intel 11 gen hasn't caught up to the M1 yet.

Yeah, unfortunately, I think all Macs going forward will be pretty much disposable products with nothing (realistically) upgradeable.

That's why it's even more important than ever to make wise decisions when choosing options.
Yea, my Macbook Pro from 2016 has 256g of drive space. My next one won't. My hack boots from 2TB. All of these new iMacs seem short on memory and RAM. But we will see how configurable they are in April

Yeah. I was a bit disappointed to see fans in the iMac. I'm sure they could have found a way to make it completely fanless by using all that aluminum to cool the M1. I'm pretty sure the iMac will be sealed with lots of glue making cleaning of the fans near impossible.
There's a hack for the fanless Airs which allows them to work hard for as long as the M1 MBPro and Mini's - its just a couple of thermal pads joining the SoC to the bottom casing. The issue is that the bottom gets just a bit too hot to have on your lap. With the iMacs being about 3 or 4 times the area of the laptops I think youre right - that they could have had passive cooling without affecting performance at all. Given where they are It wouldn't have been hard to design it so you can swap the fans without opening it but I dont suppose they have.

Buying a Mac Mini M1 was bad enough I really couldn't splash the cash on a disposable iMac. What's more the keyboard and mouse are disposable too. My own Magic Mouse is a 1st Gen using AA rechargables. I really don't like the whole tech scene is becoming so "throw away". Can't be good for the environment ...
I think this is precisely what they want - consumable computing devices designed and intended to be replaced on a frequent basis. Keeps people in the "consumption" cycle that puts cash in Apple's pocket. Hopefully people's occupations will continue to supply the assets necessary to keep up with that cycle.

One would hope they are then going to recycle those "old" devices and not just "throw them away". The claim is high recyclability.

As for this "closed system" approach Apple is once again taking, once my current Hack no longer functions, I may just go back to Windows as my work box. Everything I do on the Mac can be done there, and I have a higher degree of flexibility with hardware, etc. I'm not a fan of consumption devices - feels like further slavery to me.

Now, the iPad Pro is a different story, given its capabilities...

The message that these colorful new iMacs send is: "You like your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch now buy a Mac desktop so that all your tech works together seamlessly. Big Sur looks almost exactly like iOS or iPad OS so there's nothing new you have to learn. Sign in with your Apple ID on your new iMac and you're good to go."

It's really all about marketing, which Apple is very good at. Anyone trained in marketing knows that bright colors have a powerful effect on what people purchase. You'll see this at any supermarket or retail store or fast food restaurant. This is why these iMacs come in so many color choices. At least one of them will appeal to a potential buyer. These are people that mostly consume content, not create it.

They target the content creators with their Pro line of Macs and the new iPad Pros. That's why those only come in Silver and Space Gray. Pro's are not supposed to be at all interested in these entry level 24" iMacs. Will the larger iMacs, yet to be updated, give you access to any upgrades at all ? I don't know but it doesn't look like even a simple ram upgrade, performed by the end user, will be an option when those get a refresh and an M1X.

Though very tempted I am with the banana iMac!, I wouldn't get one!. I felt a bit underwhelmed by the iMac reveal, I'll stick with my M1 MBA, which as @nicksoph points out can be made even more powerful by the use of thermal pads, I haven't attempted it yet!. I was impressed with the iPad Pro which I would choose over the iMac.

I think they are also being affected by the limited supply of semi-conductors like most every other company in the world. TSMC is really overtaxed with demand for their products right now. Apple pays them more $ but they can still only make so many chips in any given day.

Not modded mine, no need for my usage and not until guarantee expires.
