That is a really really good question.
Super weird way to present things.

My only guess is that they want to show, as "products ready to buy" (vs customize), the likely configs they expect (or want?) people tot just click on and buy?

Very odd.

I don't know - Apple has so many things they do and tactics they use now that all just turn me off immensely. Sometimes it just feels like a game with dials to pull and wheels to turn and all roads simply lead to "get more of my money no matter what".

I also notice that you can "build the same spec" from the two different starting points...and get different shipping date estimates....for the same machine?

I ordered one. It is for my wife and twin boys. The boys will be Freshmen in high school this fall. For what my wife needs and the boys school demands, it should be fine until after they have graduated. I have been using a hack for them and quite frankly, it is just getting to be too much of a time suck. I went with silver and got the extended keyboard and trackpad. 16GB ram and 1TB hard drive.

HP first released the 27es monitor back in 2016, over 5 years ago. It's got what I see as the perfect size black bezels and silver chin. 1/2" and 1" respectively. I bought the 27" model around 4 years ago and use it daily. Would be nice if it was 1440p but back then they only sold it as a 1080p monitor. The width of the panel is about 4mm thin.

I have to wonder why Apple couldn't make something like this in 4/5K in 2021. Sure they could keep the same stand as they are currently using, it looks better than what HP used in the 27es. Put a mini Apple logo where the hp logo is and that's exactly what I would want in an iMac refresh of the 27" Intel based iMac.

Doesn't look like the right Mac for me. :(

I don't like how it looks from the front and that's what you'll see all day long.

I agree. Your HP monitor is "just right". My own Acer R241Y is much the same proportions but in black only (and 24"). Quite why Apple makes these quirky design choices I'm not sure. A bit like the over-size notch at the top of their iPhones. Android phone makers have got this screen disturbance down to a fine art and a minimum.

It's not as if the iMac "chin" has any specific design function. With a black Apple logo it might be understood as a retro reference. Indeed, do you remember, the early aluminium iMacs had the IR receiver behind the glass logo?

It appears that they want to make it look 1/2 retro and 1/2 modern and it just doesn't work for me. I'm not going to spend close to 2 grand on something I'm going to despise looking at.

I think that Apple wanted thin. Placing the main logic board behind the LCD would most probably have forced them to retain the "humpback" design.

I also like that the M1 iMac pulls air in and exhausts hot air from the bottom rather than from the back like the old humpback iMacs.

Not impressed with the chin and would have preferred having a lump at back near the bottom or better, leave the screen flat and have the computer in the base. As it is, my daughter wanted one but after a chat she has decided to sell her 2018 Air and get an M1 Air and separate monitor but still haven't chosen the monitor. Any recommendations on a 32" 4k monitor?
