Hey guys,

I've been a chump and haven't kept my computer up to date. Is it possible for me to update to El Capitan or at least Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard based on the specs I have? Would I need to buy new parts, etc? Currently running 10.6.8. Need to figure this out ASAP to get my phone working.

Here are my specs.

You should be able to install El Capitan on your Sandybridge system without any further purchases.
Your graphics card should work out of the box. Or, you can use onboard Intel GPU (HD3000).

On one of my systems (Dell 530), it has even older architecture than yours and I can quad boot 10.6.8, 10.9.5, 10.10.5 and 10.11.1 (four partitions). I am using GT240 graphics.

My 10.6.8 runs the faster (in terms of boot time and snappiness) than other os's.

There are guides around here that show you how to move from Chameleon/Chimera boot loader (which you're most likely using) to Clover (essential for running 10.11.1).

Suggest you first get your 10.6 booting from Clover first.
Then, shrink your existing 10.6 partition to make room for 10.11 (or add another drive to install 10.11).
This is to ensure that you have a fall-back OS to boot.
Then, follow guides to install 10.11 onto the new partition.
