This is my first Hackintosh, and I'm having some issues.

First, my hardware:
  • GA-Z77X-UD5H Rev 1.0, BIOS F8/F14
  • Core i5-3750K (stock speeds, for now)
  • Intel HD 4000 IGFX (for now)
  • SeaSonic X650
  • Samsung 830 128 GB SSD
  • Seagate Barracuda 2x2 TB
  • Corsair Vengeance
  • Sony Optiarc DVD+/-RW
  • Rosewill Internal Card Reader
  • Corsair Carbide 300R
Since this is my first build, I tried to play it safe with components that are well-known. My plan is to get it working as a basic Mac system, and then upgrade it for gaming down the road (graphics card, overclock, Windows SSD).

My steps:
  1. Assemble computer -- no difficulties there, the 300R is a great case
  2. Configure BIOS
  3. UniBeast 1.5.3
  4. At this point, the computer is somewhat functional in Mountain Lion:
    • No bootloader is installed, so I have to use my USB stick and then choose to boot from the SSD
    • Self-reports as a MacPro3,1 with correct processor & RAM
    • Hard drives are all recognized and functional
    • Intel HD 4000 is not recognized and video playback is choppy
    • Ethernet works, on both Intel and Atheros chips.
    • All rear USB ports work
    • Front USB ports do not work
    • Menu Bar eject button controls DVD drive, but didn't try reading a disc
    • Card reader works, at least for USB and MemoryStick Pro
    • No audio device
  5. MultiBeast 5.2.0, first attempt
    • I was sailing right along, continuing with the helpful guide at http://www.tonymacx86.com/61-unibeast-install-os-x-mountain-lion-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html
    • When I ran MultiBeast, I chose the following options:
      • User DSDT or DSDT-Free Installation
      • Drivers / Audio / Without DSDT / Realtec ALC898
      • Drivers / Disk / 3rd Party SATA
      • Drivers / Disk / 3rd Party eSATA
      • Drivers / Disk / TRIM Enabler
      • Drivers / Network / Intel - Hnak's AppleIntelE1000e
      • Drivers / Network / Atheros - Ahilua's ALXEthernet
    • PROBLEM: Hangs on boot
      • Verbose boot, the last line I see is always
        Code:
        macx_swapon SUCCESS
      • Verbose safe boot, the last line I see is
        Code:
WARNING: IOPlatformPluginUtil : getCPUIDInfo: this is an unknown CPU model 0x3a -- power management may be incomplete or unsupported
      • Single user boot does get me to a command prompt
      • Same problem whether I boot SSD from Chimera on USB or SSD
  6. MultiBeast 5.2.0, second attempt
    • Ran UniBeast, reformatted SSD, Mountain Lion installed smoothly again
    • Decided to be more careful and selected just one option -- User DSDT or DSDT-Free Installation
    • Same problem as above.
  7. Update BIOS & Configure BIOS
  8. MultiBeast 5.2.0, third attempt
    • Ran UniBeast, reformatted SSD, Mountain Lion installed smoothly again
    • Once again, decided to be careful and selected just one option -- User DSDT or DSDT-Free Installation
    • Same problem as above.
  9. MultiBeast 5.2.0, fourth attempt
    • Ran UniBeast, reformatted SSD, Mountain Lion installed smoothly again
    • Possible theories as to what my problem is:
      • I am a newbie so I missed some really obvious setting in my BIOS.
      • I am using the VGA port even though many people report that VGA doesn't work. But wouldn't the symptom of that be a garbled image, not failure to start?
      • Most people with similar builds are using discrete graphics instead of the Intel HD 4000. I could be configuring that wrong.
      • ...?
    • Don't know what to try now, so I need advice. What should I do?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Remove absolutely everything you don't need, additional HDD, card reader etc. After your first run of MultiBeast installing only User DSDT or DSDT-Free Installation before rebooting eject the UniBeast USB.

Found this to reiterate BIOS settings;

Peripherals xHCI: Auto
XHCI Hand-Off: Enabled
EHCI Hand-Off: Enabled
Marvell SATA Controller(s): Disabled
Power Management High Precision Event Timer: Enabled

The only BIOS setting that I had differently is that I had not disabled the Marvell GSATA Controller. I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

No luck -- even completely stripped down, I still get stuck at the same place. For reference, here is a representative screenshot:

The order of the last few lines varies, but the macx_swapon line is almost always last.

Have you got something in a USB3 Port?

Also make sure your SSD is in an Intel SATA Port, not a Marvel one.

Have you tried any other boot flags? GraphicsEnabler=No might be worth a shot.

Im no expert but I'm trying to help you with the basic parts :)

Just mouse & wireless keyboard. Moved them over to the red USB 2.0 ports, still no luck (tried both normal and safe boot).

And yes, the SSD is Intel SATA3 / P0. I've got the Marvell controller disabled in BIOS like you suggested.

Any other suggestions?

Oh wow, graphicsenabler=no did the trick. I've definitely tried that at least a couple times before, but hey, I'm not complaining. Thank you!!

Now my system boots, but I'm basically back where I was in Step 4 above, except I also have my HDs, DVD, and ICR unplugged and, and my ethernet no longer works (?).

I guess from here I just proceed through MultiBeast, adding features incrementally so I can figure out what happened when something doesn't work. Top priorities are definitely figuring out what happened to my ethernet and figuring out how to get it to recognize the HD 4000 graphics.

Thanks again for your help!

I was just looking at that thread a little while ago, but was gun-shy because that method requires GraphicsEnabler=Yes, which, of course, was the thing that I had to change to get out of my previous bind.

So far, I have gotten both ethernet ports, the HDs, and ICR working. I installed audio drivers and the system sees the hardware, but no actual sound. Progress...

Thanks for your help!

Victory! I went back to GraphicsEnabled=Yes, and it works beautifully. For anyone reading this thread later, I am 99% certain that the problem was that GraphicsEnabled=Yes while the monitor was plugged in via VGA was causing a kernel panic. Changing the boot argument to GraphicsEnabled=No fixed the kernel panic but didn't let Mac OS recognize the Intel HD 4000. Switching over to a DVI cable made everything better.

Oh, I also enabled TRIM Support and that also appears to be working. Just need audio, and then I'm 95% there.

Thanks again, TVMan!
