These are an upgrade from the AMD RX 580s. Note that this is a very long card* (11.7") so it may not fit in all cases. You'll want to be on at least Catalina 10.15.6 to use it. Support appears to be better in Big Sur in the Public betas. A big advantage over the RX 580s is that you'll get 6GBs of GDDR6 Vram. These will also be more energy efficient. A quality name brand PSU rated 450W or greater can support these with no problems. Rebate is good through the end of October 2020.

* If you are using a pre-built Dell Optiplex 3020/7020/9020 MT this will not fit unless you remove the riveted in HDD cage. These MSI cards are 297mm long. They also have a sturdy metal backplate.

If you want to keep your HDD cage, then go with this version of the MSI RX 5600 XT

This is the minimum spec, affordable PSU I would pair with this. EVGA sells very good PSUs and has the best warranty service if you ever need it. It will not clutter your mATX case up with extra legacy cables (molex etc.) that you don't need. In these days of over-inflated PSU prices it's nice to have this option. 64 USD shipped from Newegg.

If you want a fully modular, Gold rated PSU they start at around $110 and go up from there. A good long term investment but you don't have to spend that much on a PSU if you're not overclocking and going to extremes of power requirements.

The FPSreview.com had this to say after comparing/testing the newer 5600 XT with the RX 580.

Is the new Radeon RX 5600 XT a good upgrade path from a Radeon RX 580? It definitely is in terms of performance and efficiency for gaming at 1080p. It will allow higher game settings at 1080p and a smoother experience in the latest games. The Radeon RX 580 is showing its age, and the Radeon RX 5600 XT is modern and allows a high level of 1080p gaming experience.

The only issue is the cost difference. The Radeon RX 580 debuted at $229, and the new Radeon RX 5600 XT is $279. That’s a 21% increase in price, for a ~50% increase on average in performance. The math works out and says that is a good upgrade. In our minds though we are asking ourselves if maybe the Radeon RX 5600 XT is a little overpriced. But then we bring ourselves to the Radeon RX 590 at $279 and think that one probably has the worse value proposition considering now you can get the Radeon RX 5600 XT at that price for a much bigger performance upgrade.

With the Promo code and 20 dollar rebate this is now selling for $230. Nice deal for sure.

@trs96,

I take it the smaller card does not have a rebate, just the promo code? What are your thoughts on the MSI cards vs Sapphire (that seems to be the gold standard around here)?

Thank you

I haven't bought a 5600XT to test it yet but it should be compatible based on past reports of MSI cards in hacks. The most important thing is that Apple keeps improving the drivers so they get better. The brand of card has nothing to do with how well the drivers work. The Sapphire Pulse costs a hundred dollars more right now at Newegg. That's why I posted this MSI in the Deals of the Day thread.

I appreciate you posting the deal. I know I've seen discussions in the past about reference cards vs non-reference cards. My goal is to be able to drive 3 x 4k monitors via DP connections. Maybe this card is an overkill for me (Office, Python development) but looks very tempting.

The 5500 XT should handle 3 4K monitors. Only costs $179 for the Sapphire Pulse version. Again, Big Sur will probably get better drivers over time so you'd want to be on that to use one of these 5000 series AMD cards. These won't work at all on Mojave if you plan on using that.

5500XT by Sapphire.

That's a great option indeed. I like that it will fit into my 9020 MT Optiplex (you wrote an excellent guide btw) and I don't have to rip the drive cage out. Considering that I am not a gamer nor a video editor, I will not feel the extra 2G. My only pet peeve is that I don't want to hear to fans but if the card is not being pushed by what I am doing, should stay quiet.

Just under 9.2" so it fits easily. I think these will have the fan stop feature so most of the time fans don't spin at all.
