Hey guys,

First post here but probs first of many.

Im going about my first Hackintosh build and Im in the process of wanting to build a good dual boot system for mainly music production on the mac side and gaming (less important) on the windows side.

----- Asus z170 Sabertooth S --OR-- Asus z170 Maximus viii Ranger -----

Has anyone had any experience with either of these boards?

I have done a lot of reading about them both having some great features pertaining to what I want to build (dual boot form 2 sata express ports) but Im concerned about a few things.

1.) I need to know for sure for the ASUS saber-tooth I can update/use the UEFI to accept my 16gb 3000 Mhz RAM.

2.) which board is the best for handling external sound cards (audio interfaces)

3.) Which CPU would be best for my needs considering both these boards accept i5 6600/6600k and i7 6700/6700k.

Will the i5 6600 or the 6600k still be good for mainly production based use like music production and video editing?

or will I need the extra cores of the i7 for faster work flow.

Im not looking into overclocking at the moment but I want to be able to have the ability to in the future.

Parts I have bought so far:

NZXT S340 Case
Corsair 660W Modular PSU
Corsair Ven ddr4 (2 x 8) 16GB 3000 Mhz
Corsair sp120 fans x2
Kingston 120gb ssd X2
1TB Western Digital HDD

Hope to hear back soon!
any help would be greatly appreciated!

According to Asus' Memory QVL for this board, several brands of DDR4 3000 have been tested with it: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb...61.111996411.1497336582-1330746907.1490887027

I can't think of any reason one would be better than the other for external audio interfaces.

The general advice is don't spend the extra $ on the "K" version of any CPU unless you plan to overclock (I see below that you "reserve the right to overclock", so go with the "K" version). The i7 doesn't have any more physical cores than the i5; it does have more logical cores through Hyperthreading. It also has 8MB of cache vs. the i5's 6MB. The conventional wisdom is that the more cores (physical or logical) the better for music production.

Okay thank you very much!

You have answered everything I needed to know!

So glad to have received a response to quick. I think I will end up going with the ASUS Sabertooth as Im trying to go for a white themed build.

For Video Editing I can recomend the I7 7700-K. Hes realy fast in Adobe Premiere, for exp. Warp Stabalizer. He ist faster than some high end CPUs. He cost the nearly the same like the 6700k and hes working on Hakintosh with CPU Fake ID. Works not only on z270! He runs on z170 with uefi/bios update

Make sure (if Premiere Pro) youre using a Nvidia Card to get full CUDA Speed!
