I am currently feeling like modding a G4 tower (after two G5's) and one offering on EBay comes with a 23" Apple Cinema Display from 2003. Now I remember those displays and while those where fine at the time, I don't think today they hold up. Now on ifixit they have guides for that thing and at least disassembling it doesn't look that hard to me.

So why couldn't I just disassemble a off-the-shelf 24" 1920x1200 px display, extract the panel and transfer it into the Apple enclosure? Right?

They're tricky because of the combined power/USB data/display data feed all being in one cable. I've seen people build breakout boxes to use the original monitors with more modern GPUs, but I've never seen someone swap a different panel in- that said, there's a lot of room in those displays so I would think it wouldn't be too difficult to put a new panel in place. Just don't use that all in one cable, what a nightmare
