Microsoft mouse and keyboard customization

I use a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard/Mouse Combo. They haven't yet updated the software to play nice, unfortunately. The keyboard works better than the mouse.

Here's the big problem with the mouse: if you install the microsoft software, you gain use of the extra mouse buttons. Great! However, it then removes the option to reverse scrolling, which is the default in Lion. So everything scrolls backwards. Argh!

So currently, the keyboard situation is OK. I'd really like to know how to customize the back and forward and cursor click buttons without using Microsoft software. Any help is appreciated!

Just FYI -- USB Overdrive seems to do a good job. I'm gonna stick with it for now! If I can get it working well enough, I'll ditch MS all together and pay the $20!
